S210 - Tech Alarm 108 after Drive Cliq Disconnect

Basically, I unplugged the drive cliq cable on the S210 drive (v5.2) to test its response, and I get an alarm (Tech alarm 108) which can not be acknowledged through the TIA portal Alarm Display, or through MC_RESET. 

Looking at the help-file for the Tech Alarm 108, it says to check the Status.Sensor for the "communication OK" parameter, and the "state" parameter. It also says that you can not enable the technology object again until encoder intialization is complete -- obviously, cycling power will reinitialize the encoder, but my main question is if there a way to do it in the software?

• Try first to reset the fault in the S120 and then restart the TO with MC_Reset.

My understanding is when drive-cliq devices are connected, they are not enabled except on power up.  This is to protect a running process from inadvertent or accidental disruption when someone plugs up a cable to the wrong control unit or drive device.

Of course you cannot clear an on-going fault until the reason for the fault has been cleared.

Most drive faults can be cleared by an acknowledge because they are motor / drive dynamics related, like overcurrent, undervoltage, overspeed, underspeed, following error and such.  For a system problem, it can only be cleared by establishing communications with the drive-cliq device, and again, which as far as I understand only happens at power up.

There _might_ be a way around this in special situations.  Contact Siemens Support via Support Request (create request) and ask how this can be done.

Since you were intentionally creating this situation for testing purposes, is it really a problem to simply cycle power after plugging it back up?  Probably not, but asking so you know that's what Support people are likely to ask too.

 Thanks for the info. I have a customer who has an encoder error that gets triggered after some time -- since I don't have too much info about their situation I was looking to explore some problem solving techniques. I know often that Siemens has a variety of techniques to do things, and some can be non-intuitive if you are used to doing something a certain way so I was just checking to see if anyone had some special insight into this. Good to see that there is a general consensus that drive cliq errors must be reinitialized through power cycle though -- the Tech Support guy mentioned that this may be the case too.

Oh, I just notice you have a S210 not a S120.  
I assume the S210 will not allow any changements on DriveCliq during run. 

Your customer should check or replace the One-Cable-Connection.

I reran the test today and looked at the webserver of the S210. It looks like it is awaiting an acknowledgement via the G1_STW (Encoder Control Word).

I tried using MC-Post Servo to toggle the ACK on the telegram which is linked to the TO, but realized this is just the normal STW.

Does anyone know how to access the encoder STW if I am using telegram 105 on a Tech Object?

The "Siemens telegram 105" defines the data exchange. Due this is independent from the drive or PLC type, this information should work:

• Tel 105 on Page 2076 of PDF file (-> PZD 6)
• Gx_STW on 2nd half of web page (-> Bit 15)

 Perfect, thanks for that. I realized I could find the G1_STW in the tag table under the output address of the 105 telegram and then set the G1_STW bit 15 through the MC_PostServo block.
