S5 communication Error

Waferops Posts: 2 Rating: (0)	We have 6 S5 PLCs with Siemens # 6ES5188-3UA12. I am trying to connect to the PLC to backup the programs. I have bought the S5 Software V7.2 and the cable 6ES5734-1BD20. I use this with a 25-9 pin adaptor to connect to the COm 1 of my PC. I tried on several tools to go online and get an error "Undefined character in AS". The vendor came in for the tool and I used his cable and another computer and I get the same thing. He is able to communicate on his computer though. Is it possible that I have different software in the PLC? Do I have to stop the PLC? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

fritz Diamond Expert Joined: 10/7/2005 Last visit: 6/9/2023 Posts: 2969 Rating: (1025)	Hello Waferops you won't have to Stop the CPU to go online and since your suppliers Step 5 Laptop can go online and yours doens't work on any of your S5 CPU's, the issue will be related to your PC/Step5 install. My question is, what Windows OS are you using for your Step 5? If it NT or 2000 the FAQ below may contain the answer to your problem: Connection problems to the CPU with AS511 in Win NT/2000 Check too the general compatibility of Step5 and Windows to ensure your install complies: Compatibility of STEP 5 versions with Windows operating system I hope this helps

Waferops Posts: 2 Rating: (0)	Thank you fritz, I think this is going to be the issue. So how can I get the version of software that is in the PLC other than from the vendor? I am using Windows XP and 7.23 on my laptop but if the version in the PLC is older than it will not work with my OS. Is this correct? I have emailed the vendor and waiting a reply on the version in the PLC itself. Thank you.

Navnag Platinum Expert Joined: 11/21/2007 Last visit: 6/1/2023 Posts: 2321 Rating: (303)	Hello If you have STEP5 V7.2 loaded in your PC, then you can upload S5 Program downloaded from any version of STEP5. In simple terms, it does not matter which STEP5 version was used to download the S5 program. You can upload it with with STEP5 V7.2. Fritz is right, problem probably lies with your software installation / hardware. Have you chaed your COM port ( WIth a loopback adaptor ). ? Also this type of Error "Undefined character received from As" comes if the PLC and PC are not connected to a common earth. Suggest you connect the PC to same power supply and Earth as the PLC and check. You may try it with another PC / Laptop with built in RS232 port. Using USB to Serial convertors is always a pain for new users. Cheers Navnag

One thing that may help is in the Settings page; try to change the Interface AS511 to different ones in the list, lower baud-rate for example.I hope this helpsMarciano
