S5 PLC with CP5431(FMS) as passive communication partner, is it possible?

JMM Posts: 17 Rating: (0)	Hi, Is it possible to configure S5 PLC with CP5431 to act as passive communication partner in FMS(Profibus) communication ? Communication partner is PC with running siemens OPC server. Or is it always needed to be configured as active connection establisher (possibly because this CP cannot be slave in bus) ? jklm Platinum Member Joined: 12/22/2006 Last visit: 1/25/2022 Posts: 1742 Rating: (309)	Hello, When you connect between an OPC server and a CP5431, the CP5431 normally remains a Profibus Master (just like the CP plugged in the OPC server is also a Profibus Master). I agree that the CP5431 supports FMS (Layer 7 connections), but it also supports Layer 2 connections (FDL connections). These are known as S5-S5 Links (AG-AG connections) in the CP5431. See chapter 7 of this link: http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/1804226 The OPC acts like an S5 system, and you configure an FDL connections in step7/NCMPC. In this link http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/17596048 you have the configuration of an FDL link beween an S7 system and a CP5431. Very large parts of that FAQ can be applied to configure the link with the OPC server. For the OPC programming, you will use the SEND/RECEIVE interface.

JMM Posts: 17 Rating: (0)	Hi, Actually question is related to existing system with FMS protocol already in use where OPC server and PLC communicate with each other. Problem is that in this system there are some network problems which quite often lead to disconnection and reconnection communication link. Most of the time all works fine but some scenarios where both PLC and OPC decide to initiate new connection at the same time, connection never gets properly up. This occurs quite rarely as it requires lot of bad luck... So, basicly eiher PLC or OPC should be configured as passive and other as active connection establisher...

I expect the client to establisch the application association. In FMS you have also several types of application associations: 1) MMAC application associations (Master/Master acyclic). I believe that the OPC should be the FMS client here, and the PLC the FMS server. Server jobs have an even A-NR. If you have an application association with only an even job number in the CP5431, I expect the connection to be established by the OPC server. 2) MSAC: acyclic master-slave-application associations The confirmed services read and write are possible. The master is always client. If the OPC server is the FMS client, the OPC server is responsible for the establishment. Do you know how which type of applicaction associations are configured between OPC server and the CP5431.
