S7-1200 floating boundary between program and user data: Need clarification

shwetha Posts: 23 Rating: (0)	Hello All, I understand that S7-1200 series provide up to 50KB of work memory with floating boundary between program and user data. What does "floating boundary" imply? Can we set the boundary between program and user data? if so, how can we do that? Could anyone explain me in detail about this floating boundary concept. fritz Diamond Member Joined: 10/7/2005 Last visit: 12/2/2024 Posts: 3028 Rating: (1057)	Hello shwetha "floating boundary" simple means that there is NO fixed assignment nor division between programmemory (used for OB's, FC's and FB's) and data memory (used for DB's). As such,you can use any or all of the workmemory for OB's, FC,s, FB,s and DB's and only need to worry that the program code and DB's together do not exceed the total available work memory Certain older S7 CPU's had on the contrary afixed amount of work memory for program code and a seperate fixed amount for data, which wasn't all that helpful if you had a lot of program and only a few DB's or the other way round. For example, the 1214 family has 50KB of working memory and 2MB of total memory. Unfortunately, you cannot change that relationship. If we want smaller DBs or fewer DBs, we cannot increase working memory to allow for larger program space. I've run out of memory on applications in the past and had to reduce system capabilities in order to squeeze everything in the PLC program space. Why can't we page through memory like PCs do to increase application memory?
