Currently i am working on what seems to be a huge project. Therefore i need to know what the maximum input and output limit is on a S7-1200 PLC with expansion modules. Can you connect more inputs if you remove some outputs and vice versa etc? If a S7-1500 would be more favourable in situations like these i am open to change controller.

You can have a look at the properties of your CPU.

There is mentioned how many I/O you can use. (You can even use Remote IO)

And you will have more information about the number of expansion modules.

Just to add an example of the I/O capabilities of a S7-1200, here is a screenshot taken from the S7-1215C Technical Data.

The process image can deal with 8196 inputs and 8196 outputs, but the main CPU can connect only to 8 I/O modules only; the rest can come either through Profinet IO or Profibus distributed I/O stations.
