S7-1200 PROFINET IO- best way to read/write data from Profinet IO slave

nburczyk Posts: 7 Rating: (0)	Hi, I am trying to connect a S7-1212C to a profinet IO Device pcu-ethio card from Brad Communications. I have added the gsdml to TIA and can see the device on the network but any attempt to read data from it using the RDREC seem to not work. I am attaching my RDREC configuration. Is it properly configured? Additionally I have a second option of configuring both device as IO Controllers but I can not find the GSDML file for s7-1212C available online. Where can I find it? I am using TIA V11 SP2 SE with update 2 with a STEP7 Basic license. Thanks Attachment RDREC config.jpg (2610 Downloads)

You would not need a RDREC. Data would just magically appear in the configured input words.

What shows up in TIA are two objects: Input 36bytes_1 Output 36bytes_1 both with addresses 256 to 291. Is this the prepackaged telegram you're talking about? Can I access it just like any memory? Thank you for your help Yes, once you configure the distributed I/O to use 256-291, probably 16 words (int/uint), or 8 DInts or Reals, or 4 LReals, you can read/write to those predefined addresses without any extra work. You will need to check each configuration so you can map your Inputs and Outputs to the proper datatypes for your device. For example, you might have a status word coming from device with 16-bits of digital data you need to decode, you might have 16-bits of control bits, like reset, fault ack, run, stop, jog (depending on your slave controls). You might have feedback from the device giving process parameters and fault or warning codes. Look in your profinet documentation and it will tell you what values are there. The device may be configurable to allow the device to send & receive variable data depending on your process needs.

Currently I am just sending simple integers across without any control bits. How can I access the distributed I/O data? Using the Move command? You can use MOVE, compare instructions (==, >, <, <>, etc.), NORM_X/SCALE_X to convert it to user units (like %), or anything else you want. Your first 16-bit INT is the 1st two bytes of your configured address. I believe that would be IW256 (word 1), IW258 (word 2), and so on up to the 8th word. To send data, QW256 is 1st word TO thedevice. Just put the properly scaled value into that word. Siemens typically uses +/-16384 to indicated +/-100% of some value, like for drives, 16384 = 100% max speed of the drive/motor. Your manual should specify the value and any scaling. I recently worked on a torque sensor that sent the value without the decimal. The device configuration implied some number of decimal places, and my plc logic had to convert the input INT to a REAL with the proper power of 10.
