S7-1200 / STEP 7 Basic - Check list for first online access

I ask you to help me with suggestions to improve it. Thanks 0 Software Installation: Check the compatibility of STEP 7 Basic and Windows (http://support.automation.siemens.com/BR/view/en/51120883) - No virtual machine. Any error messages during the installation? Are the software up to date (Updates for STEP7 V11 and WinCC V11: http://support.automation.siemens.com/BR/view/en/50085730)? 1 Cable Check leds of the PLC (link LED = green, TX/RX = Flashing orange); Check the LED of the PC board 2 PC Ethernet card configurations: It is possible to have more than one Ethernet card on the same PC. However to avoid problems in Windows, for test proposes, let just one enabled. Note (enable/disable in the network configuration, not just with wireless button). Check if the enabled Ethernet board have the protocols: Profinet IO RT-Protocol , Profinet IO RT-Protocol(LLDP), Simatic Industrial Ethernet (ISO), TCP/IP For test proposes too, I suggest to set a fix IP address to the for test proposes. 3 Windows Plug and Play conficts: check in Windows - System - Device Manager, if there are no conflicts ("?" or "!" signs). 4Firewall / Antivirus are right configured? For test propose deactivate it. 5Check if the actual PLC IP address (or the new for first IP configuration) stays in the same subnet range of the PC. Note: test with the PC with a fixed IP address; no "get automatic IP" setting. 6Ping If the PLC has already a IP address, check with PING (check with and without the cable plugged, to confirm that there is no repeated IP address in the network). 7online test STEP 7 Basic -> Project Tree, Online Access, select the PC Ehternet board, update accesible devices After a scanning time, it is possible to see a folder with a IP or MAC address of the PLC.

Thank you Pegaia for the information. Please allow me to add some of my experience. I have a new S7-1200 and I've spent only a few days with the software. It is the first time to make the connection between my PC and the S7-1200 PLC. I could not establish communication then I followed the above steps. Here is some more detail. My problem was that the network card was set to "Obtain an IP address automatically". To resolve the issue I did the following under Windows XP SP3: 1. Open the network connections (Control Panel >> Network Connections) 2. Right click on "Local area connections" 3. Select "Properties" 4. Select under "General" page the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" device 5. Click the "Properties" button 6. Select the page "Alternative Configuration" 7. Select the "User configured" option and type in the following: IP address:= 192.168.0.200 Subnetmask:= 255.255.255.0 8. Click "ok" and close all open windows. Note that the IP address is my selection, you are welcome to come up with your own. What I like about making use of the "alternative configuration" is that you do not loose any previous network setups - you only add. 9. Restart your PC. This step ensures that the IP setup is used correctly. With the PC now started up, you can start your software (In my case Step Basic 7 V11.0 SP1) Also connect your PC and PLC to each other with the right ethernet cable. On my Step 7 software I do the following for my new PLC (there is other methods): 1. Select the "Project view" page 2. Go to the "Project tree" 3. Go to "Online access" selection 4. Under <your ethernet card> selection, double click "Update accessible devices" link. 5. A new device will be shown if found. The device is generic if the device has no IP address yet. 6. Select the device and go to the Functions heading to Assign a network address. My personal default for stand alone PLC: IP address:= 192.168.0.1 Subnetmask:= 255.255.255.0 7. Repeat step 4 to see the PLC popup in place of the generic IP device. Now you are ready to read diagnostics on the device, check the firmware version and set the time. 8. The PLC is ready to take on the program you have designed.. unless you first wish to update the firmware first (which I recommend). === I hope this is of help to all the guys-and-gals out there. mhr456 Posts: 4 Rating: (0)	Hi William and Mr. Pegaia, Thank you for the infomation. I have some questions. Is it necessary to add an additional IP address with the same subnet as PLC? Because I assigned the PLC with the IP address which was in the same subnet as my Laptop (but, it didn't work). Actually, I want to configure the PLC to communicate over a network with my PC and another controller. I can ping to the PLC easily. When I connect the PLC with my laptop directly, it shows the PLC in the list of accessible devices. But when I try to load, it asks me for an additional IP address, which i cant do because of some user access rights. Is the CPU I selected in the program(as in the screenshot) appropriate? Because that was the least CPU I could select. Thank you in advance.

mhr456 Posts: 4 Rating: (0)	Hi, I solved the problem yesterday. I tried to assign the IP address of the PLC which is in the same subnet as my PC. But, it could not connect. Alternatively, I tried to assign the IP address to my PC, which would be in the same subnet as the PLC. And it worked. Thank you.

alcak_kofte Posts: 2 Rating: (0)	For me it was the firewall. after trying for a half day, i found out that symantec endpoint protection was blocking me. after disabling it i set the connection up in half a minute. Can anyone tell the exact port nr. to make an exception in the firewall? Thanks beforehand
