I am trying to receive data from a handheld barcode scanner into an S71500 over ethernet

SCANNER I have set the IP address and it gives me a port number 51000

PLC I used the TRCV_C command, I get a status message of 7000

It doesn't work and I am not sure what I am doing wrong or how to proceed

Hi,

Siemens recommends to use Ports from 2000 to 5000 - your Port-Adress is not optimum.

Did you check Error-Bit? If Error Bit gets true, save Status - it´s possible you get another Hex-Mesage there than 7000.

I see problem in ADHOC mode not defined with also LEN parameter depended definition. In this case check in your TIA v15 system manual TRCV_C description and check ADHOC mode, this is your solution I think. You can see also examples there.

in other case what I see is also CONT parameter in false. Check documentation of TRCV_C to see that this parameter controls communication connection so I expect it in TRUE as you need communicate with partner. What you configure as Client and Server? Who make active establishment of connection? Share other infos.

Update: in other case you can have that port number set, no problem but you need to know what you do.

Let's go down the list of parameters straight from the F1-help, but first let's define what this block does.

F1-Help [TRCV_C]

Description

The "TRCV_C" instruction is executed asynchronously and implements the following functions in sequence:

Setting up and establishing a communication connection

Receiving data via an existing communication connection

Terminating or resetting the communication connection

Every time you activate this block, you enable a single receipt until the parameters are adjusted to enable another receipt.  If you want continuous async TCP receipt, you should instead use TCON, TRCV, and TDISCON.

The F1-help states CONT input must be =1 for a communication connection to be set up and established.  With it 100% false, that will never happen.

The LEN parameter is set to 0, and the DATA input does not specify the receive area length.  Often you see something P#DBn0.0 BYTE 10 at the DATA input, where the 10 specifies the length, at least when you do not provide the length via the LEN input.  The F1-help on this is very good.

Does your barcode scanner send the barcode data as a Siemens string? I ask because in the "DATA" parameter to your TRCV_C block, it shows a blank string of length 1.

Port # 51000 is acceptable, just not optimal according to Siemens. 

The status "message" 7000 says nothing is being received.  When new data does arrive, it toggles the DONE bit. 

The data receipt should probably be configured as a character array.  You then use that with the received length to convert to string using the built in string function that accepts char arrays, length, and creates a string output.

[Advanced approach] You can however "cheat" by using a string in a non-optimized DB, then pass an absolute address 2 bytes past the start of the string, and after successful receipt, using the RCVD_LEN output to assign to the string length via absolute address.

I was able to change the port to 2000 (even thought it seems 51000 is acceptable)

I can either set my hand scanner to ETH STD or EIP (Ethernet IP) I am not sure what to set there? Does this make a difference to ADHOC terminal?

I have set CONT to true

I have changed DATA into an array of characters

My status now toggles between code 7001 and 7002

What are the descriptions for 7001/7002?

Ethernet standard unless they provided an Ethernet/IP function block for TIA Portal to decode it for you.

Active vs passive, I always read the instruction F1-help.  UDP I think is passive.  TCP is active, at least I think that is the way it falls out.  That's why I always read the instruction help because it tells us what each protocol needs.
