flynowworklater Posts: 12 Rating: (0)	I'm trying to get the Time-of day sync working between a S7-319 PN CPU and a connected PC running Windows XP SP3. Somehow it does not work but cannot find out why. This is what I did so far: PC: Added variable Local NTP (DWORD) to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters and set the value to "1" and restarted the PC (a second PC is synchronized to this PC using net time and this works). PLC: At theproperties of thePN-port theoption TimeOfDay sync is activated on IP-address10.26.20.116 which is the IP address of the PC mentioned above and the interval is set to10s. This does not work. I'm not sure I should set something in the clock settings of the CPU. I trieddifferent settings here(some settingsgive an inconsistent compilation). Suggestions much appreciated.

This bus setup is found in "large" CPUs, i.e. from the CPU 315-2 PN/DP up to and including the CPU319-3 PN/DP. In this case, in the Properties dialog of the CPU you select the "Diagnostics/Clock" tab and set "As slave" for the synchronization mode in the PLC. Which SIMATIC S7-300/S7-400 modules support the NTP time-of-day message and how do you activate this kind of time synchronization?

flynowworklater Posts: 12 Rating: (0)	Thanks for the reply, new problems though: Setting the CPU "As Slave" does not seem possible. Save and compile delivers the error "Save and Compile (1230:3000) The system data could not be generated because the configuration is inconsistent." Checking details provides an additional error"Save and Compile (13:5371) The CPU may only be configured once as a time slave for time synchronization". I'm not sure what is going wrong but it appears not possible to set both the PN Time-of-day synchronization together with CPU "As Slave". If I try to compile one without the other compilation is succesfull. Suggestions ???

Sorry it's my mistake.

If you using one of the following CP:

No.	SIMATIC S7 300	MLFB	Firmware
1	CP343-1	6GK7 343-1EX30-0XE0	as from V2.2
2	CP343-1 Adv	6GK7 343-1GX30-0XE0	as from V1.0
3	CP343-1 Lean	6GK7 343-1CX10-0XE0	as from V2.2

you need to make additional settings into CPU.

In your case you need only to enable and add NTP Server in PN port if CPU. But why it's not working? Did you look at diagnostic (NCM S7 diagnostics)?To see there the status of NTP Server?

J_Bell Posts: 5822 Rating: (412)	Hello, personally I fear you will not see in the NCM special diagnostics if the PN CPU updates the time by the NTP server. The only device you would be able to check about this would be the CP, this is right... and I think this is what you thought, don't you? I would say the only way to check is the CPU diagnostics itself. Maybe you try to manually change the Time on the CPU and if the setup cycle to update the time in the CPU passes without the CPU has been adjusted to the real time... the NTP Server connection is not up. Sadly I do not know any other way to check if the NTP Server is connected... because I do not have such a new CPU available but maybe you will find some information at the WEB Server on the CPU, if it runs or in the CPU diagnostics. flynowworklater Posts: 12 Rating: (0)	I tried to perform some diagnostics using NCM but this seems not possible. NCM says "No diagnostics possible for the module with module ID 6ES7 318-3EL00-0AB0". I did not find any other way to check the server connection, not in the Module Information en not in Hardware Diagnostics. Actual status: A windows XP machine is capable of synchronizing the time of day with another windows XP machine which serves as time server. Although the settings in the CPU / PN appear to becorrect and linked to the IP address of this time serverno time synchronization takes place. There seems no apparantway of diagnostics. I'm out of options, any help much appreciated.

What I am asking is what device is it's Time Server? Second point is, which Stratum is used in this time Server? I know that the PLC requires a Time which is synchronized and the synchronization needs to be in a very close time environment. So if your Time Server is not synchronized with a STRATUM 1 or a little bit lower STRATUM Time Server... the time may not be accepted by the PLC. Maybe you will find out some more. In the Internet youwill alsofind some tools which you can use as NTP Server in your network. I use one myself and I am able to synchronize my time with the Internet and I can synchronize all my PLC’s and PCs at the network too... Well this NTP Server is not the Microsoft embedded... but it works. I hope you will find a solution for you. Best regards J_Bell

flynowworklater Posts: 12 Rating: (0)	Reading about stratum I understand your remark now. However I fail to see the relevance (becauseof a complete lack of understanding I presume). I have two personal computers of which one is synchronized once a day to the other using the command "set time". The only thing I want is to synchronize the PLC to one of these two no matter to what the PC is synchronized to. Neither of these personal computers use NTP (I think) and this does not matter (I think). I don't care if the PC's are not exactly on the real time. For the moment I'm totally lost on an issue which I believe should not be an issue. Can someone put me back on track here ?
