S7 V5.5 vs. Portal?

Using all the advantages mentioned by Robster . But in case of existing old projects, which you should maintained "keep" the "old Step7 5.5". For the moment TIA Portal support only the latest version of released hardware (http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/50029533). I am not sure will support the old one even in future. In software point of view - I tried to "convert" one old project of mine (changed in advance the hardware configuration in order to cover supporting modules), even after received a lot of errors... So for sure is better to use the newer, but take in mind what do you have at the moment. Best regards, Hristo Mihalev

Aristotelis Posts: 147 Rating: (34)	I don't think atm TIA Portal V11 is mature enough to replace Step7 v5(.5 or earlier)... That said, we all understand that Portal is the future in SIMATIC programming, and wait until it supports 64bit Windows, that will make a huge difference in productivity (think using 16GB of RAM when creating HMI !!!) IMHO, the main problem is when converting old projects to Portal v11. I tried with S7-1200 libraries and it didn't work, and I know of cases involving Step7 v5 projects that failed. (That is just the rough edges of transition) Also, it lacks support for some older Hardware (in the S7-300 family at least). ATM, there is lack of documentation regarding both (PLC & HMI) Portal v11, which is important, but I'm sure it's temporary. Overall, the Portal is a step Siemens had to make, sooner than later. Waiting for SP1, and then we can talk again. I am happy to be working with the new Portal, and I think that productivity will increase and developing time will drop. But, I'm still keeping my old 32bit Windows with Step7 v5, but learning at the same time the new Portal.
