Scalance X204-2 (v. 2BB10) won't send mails?

ToSo Posts: 6 Rating: (0)	Good morning everybody, I'm trying to get a Scalance X204-2 to send me statusreports via email. Unfortunately, none of the Mails ever reached me. A closer look in the logfiles of my Mailserver reveald, that the Switch tried to send a mail but wasn't sendig a correkt HELO-Message to the Server, so that the Server answerd with a Syntax Error 501 (domain name missing) and terminated the connection. A Colleague told me, that this must be a mistake in the Clients Mailcomponent and that our Mailserver can't be configured to accept such a bad HELO. So.... Can someone confirm that the Mail-Feature doesor doesn't work? Anyone got an Idea, what I may have not yet configured or configured wrong? Thank you very much Tobias

ToSo Posts: 6 Rating: (0)	Hello, the Mailserver is configured to not require any authentication and is even configured to accept mails for local recipients without any prior authentication. The problem seems not to be a authentication failure, but an incorrect HELO command from the Scalance device. Maybe you can configure some mailservers to even accept this and proceed with a 250 message, but that's not a solution. The Softwareversions: Boot Software: v1.10 22.02.2007 Firmware: v 2.1.14 I thought about a new Firemware yesterday, but couldn't find one... Thank you again Tobias

J_Bell Posts: 5822 Rating: (412)	Hello ToSo, I have checked the RFC 2821 which explains the SMTP which is used here. The RFC says that the Domain does not have to be mentioned in the HELO message (see chapter 3.2 Client Initiation) so if the Server requires this information there might be a compatibility issue. The SCALANCE X has been tested with many Freeware SMTP Servers too, so maybe you choose another. Best regards J_Bell

ToSo Posts: 6 Rating: (0)	Hello J_Bell, although I don't agree to your interpretation of the RFC 2821 due to Section 4.1.1.1 or the original SMTP-RFC 0821 Section 4.1.1 and 4.1.2 all of them showing the syntax forafull HELO-command with some kind of Domain or Hostname, I'd like to try another Mailserver. Unfortunately, I have difficulties in finding one that runs on windows (no penguins available, sorry) AND accepts Mailaccounts wirhout passwords - is there a way that the Scalance identifies itself with mailaccount and -password? The Webinterface obviously doesn't have a mailpassword-field... I'm sorry for still needing help..... Thank you Toso

I usually use the Jana Server for such short tests, http://www.janaserver.de/ this one works great and is just one of many SMTP Severs available. The IT or Advanced CP is and will not becapableto use ID and Password to connect toa SMTP Server. Best regards J_Bell

ToSo Posts: 6 Rating: (0)	Good Morning, ToSo the Server answerd with a Syntax Error 501 (domain name missing) and terminated the connection. now, after having found the solution, it's almost unbelievable that I couldn't fix the Problem right from the start. The HELO-Command send by the Scalanceswitch was incorrect, or better: incomplete. The Scalance had no Domain Name to attach to the HELO. Instead of using its own IP (which would be an easy and common choice), the Scalance requires a "System Name" in the "System Configuration"-Tab... Bad luck that the guy who originally configured the Switches didn't need that name.... The good thing is: by now I know several Mailserverprograms and had a deep look inside Mailprotocolls... Who knows for what that's worth.... Thank you very much. Greetings Tobias
