My customer requests a quote to provide Ethernet connectivity to a number of their assembly machines that have mostly S7-300 and also an S7-400 systems.  They plan to use these connections for a new "to be defined" MES .

The machines have a number of different CPUs including 315-2DP, 315-2PN/DP, 314C-2DP, 317-2PN/DP, 318-3PN/DP, 319-3PN/??,  and a 412-??PN/??

All machines have an open slot in their first rack.

Do I need to add a card to machines with Profinet or can I tap directly into the PN for an ethernet connection?

I have no idea what amount of data or sampling frequency but was advised to estimate for only basic data: 100 words of data read once an hour from each machine. I have no idea if that qty or frequency is reasonable to support MES but that's what has been requested.

Would the Lean version of the CP card work for me?

Any recommendations?

Profinet is built upon TCP/IP standards:

http://us.profinet.com/profinet-uses-tcpip/

So other connections using TCP/IP such as TCP/IP exchanges, Modbus/TCP and ISO-on-TCP can share the same communication channel.

Its a Matter of communication ressources. The S7400 should have no problems but on S7300 you have to be shure that there are free OP/S7 Communication ressources if you work with the common Put/Get Communication types with RCF1006 communicaiton over Port 102.
