serial to profibus connection problem

mohamedsamy Posts: 50 Rating: (2)	it is known that profibus dp communicates over rs 485 could I use a normal rs 232 to rs 485 converter to link a serial device to a profibus DP OR do I have to use a profibus gateway to connect them ? and why can't I use normal converters (in case of I have to use a gateway ) ? another case : If I want to convert from serial rs 232 to PPI what are my options thanks in advance

There is too much for the converter to take into account, spped conversion, data formats... Siemens offers these 2 models (from RS232 or USB to MPI/Profibus) PC Adapter USB: http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/14692974 PC Adapter: http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/4073489 Other manufacturers have some offers too, look on the Web. For PPI on the other hand, I have heard of some using a standard RS-232 to RS-485 converter, as the protocol is much simpler and will work at 9600 Baud.
