Server and Client communication

June Posts: 5 Rating: (0)	Hi, Somebody outher can help me on this, Im running WinCC v6.2 both Server and Client in one subnetwork and its running fine and no problem. Both are getting IP address from DHCP on that area, But when we transfer our Client in other location in different subnetwork, now our Client cannot open the project of the Server. New IP address on Client is automatically assigned by DHCP on that area. We can both pingIP addresses through the network from Serveror onClient side, We can transfer files vice versa,they can also see each other through remote desktop. On Simatic Shell they cannot see each other. What should be the problem? Is there any configuration to performedon both computers? Thank's and hoping for a reply

neo Posts: 264 Rating: (59)	Hello June, Wich Settings do you use for the router that connects the 2 subnets? WinCC Server / Client uses dynamic ports for communication. You should 'open' all ports, so Server and Client can communicate. best regards...

Thisare their configuration by DHCP: For Server: IP Address: 172.16.3.126 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 GateWay: 172.16.3.1 For Client: IP Address: !72.16.11.7 SubNet: 255.255.254.0 GateWay: 172.16.11.1 I can ping this IP address in Both computers, and also I can pingby their computer name

June Posts: 5 Rating: (0)	I have read all the FAQs and Forum regarding Server and Client andthey areonly standard procedure for configuration of Server and Client. As I mention before my Server and Client are working fine and no problem in same subnet, but we have to transferour Client in Control room with different subnet and it seem I have problem with this two different subnets. This aremyquestion; Did Server and Client are really working with two different subnets? Did anybody experience this before? Is there any configuration to make this server and client work?

neo Posts: 264 Rating: (59)	Hello June, Yes, we´re running 3 WinCC Servers and about 6 Clients in 2 different subnets inWinCC v6.2 + HF5 + Patch 3. Wich router do you use? I think a NAT Router will not work. And we had the problems with the ports. Hmm. Difficult Problem. TCP sends requests outside the own subnet to the standard gateway. But this seems to work. ICMP works (you say you can ping your server and clients) And also DNS works. What´s with Wins (Microsoft´s Netbios)? I don´t know if WinCC uses the Netbios name or a FQDN name for communication in a Domain System. Perhaps you should check if ping on computername and ping of FQDN Name works. Perhaps you also could use a network sniffer on a client and / or server for checking communication. (e.g. Microsoft Network Monitor or Wireshark) and post the results here! best regards...

sonduskaisgod Posts: 33 Rating: (5)	June, Can you manually navigate from the client to the server, find the MCP file, open it (double click) and then put it in runtime? Avoid using Wincc tobrowse the networkand see what happens. Are you running any antivirus software? -Chris

The problem is that wincc doesn't work when the server is placed in a different subnet. we want to put the server inside our server management subnet while the clients are in a different subnet. we want to put the server in the same subnet with other servers so that we can manage it better. we wantto include itwith our enterprise backup and recovery and disaster recovery. we want to secure as well the server from risks. is it really the best practice that the server and the client placed in the same subnet? That is what was said by our company's consultant/vendor from Siemens as well. i was quite disappointed because i believe Siemens was able to foresee beforehand the implementation of subnets as a best practice in network implementation and management. can someone pm me if it is possible to use different subnets? or some from Siemens to confirm that it is the best practice to install server and client within the same subnet? thanks.
