Set an OPC server without PLC

lebowski Posts: 14 Rating: (0)	Hi all, I have to set a Siemens OPC server to communicate with a S7 PLC. I have try with a S7 spare that I have in my company with a dummy program. Everything is work fine. Since the PLC is connected the OPC server retrive all the variables and make me happy... Now my problem is that the control system is provided by another part and I will not have the PLC with the control system since late next mounths. I would like to have the OPC server with the right point now, so I can start to work with my client even the point are not live. I can have only a excel file with the memory allocation. 1. Is that enough to configure all the point "offline" in the OPC server ? 2. if no, There is a way to import all the point ? What I have to ask to the control provider ? thank you in advance, lebowski.

J_Bell Posts: 5822 Rating: (412)	Hello, I am not sure, are there any Symbols in use? If so and the project is already available you can collect the Symbols table and import it into your OPC Server, that way you have all the names and you can work on it with your PC program. Best regards J_Bell

Thank you for the answer, I dont know that maybe mine are a lame questions, unfortunally I dont have expirience with Siemens PLC and I just have this Siemens OPC server to set.

The control builder says the program is not ready yet and they just have released a list of signal without any Symbol name but only description and memory zone location (exemple: start engine.....location DB260DBX 1.0).
Do you think this is enough to configure the OPC server or maybe a should ask for a Symbol list (if they use) ?
In case I have a Symbol list where I should import in the OPC server ?

J_Bell Posts: 5822 Rating: (412)	Hello, well this list is fully sufficient, I would say. With this list you can hardcode your Connection points in your Program, no question. If you would get a Symbolic list you can be a bit more flexible, especially if something changes in the PLC but anyway. The Symbolic list can be imported in the Symbolic Editor in SIMATIC NET and theConfiguration Console within SIMATIC NET. Good luck J_Bell

lebowski Posts: 14 Rating: (0)	First of all thank you for prompt answer. I have further work on it and now i'm in this situations: who is working with the program will not use the symbolic name. So I have the list with the DB where I can exchange the data. Now my problem is: How can I define the OPC point in the server since I dont have the program and without use a PLC ? I mean, if I define in Simatic Net the configuration, then when Im connecting with the OPC scout I can see only a red cross on the DB and I can not add any point with address DBXXX. I would like to have the DB that I need, so I can define the point in the OPC server and finally get the point in my HMI with the OPC client defined on it. Thank you for the answer, Lebowski.

J_Bell Posts: 5822 Rating: (412)	Dear Lebowski, there we have the Problem. You explained yourself that, if you use the SCOUT, you only see a red cross, because the PLC is not available. This is the issue with the S7-Protocoll, it detects only what is there and what can be used. If you want to use an Item that is not there you have to hardcode it. This can be done by manually edit the Item and enter the destination. Well the result will stay the same, let’s say the State "Bad" but as you do not have a valid station available you will have a hard time to get something simulated. The Simulator would provide you one DB, but this will surely not be the structure you expect. I fear you will have to hardcode your links and than wait until you get your PLC as remote station. The tests than show you if you get everything you expect from the PLC. Best regards J_Bell
