Rajesh Hebbar Posts: 16 Rating: (0)	Hello, Can Simotion be used as a Motion controller with 3rd party Servo Drives on a Profinet/Profibus network. The controller is required to perform the PATH Interpolation like SCARA, Articulated robotic arm etc. Can the same thing be possible if the bus used is CAN or EtherCAT. Rgds Rajesh

DenisMor Posts: 344 Rating: (50)	In order to successfully control coordinated motion from Simotion ,a third party servo drive must not only be able to communicate over PROFIBUS or PROFINET, but also needs to support synchronous communications: PROFINET IRT for example. In addition to synchronous communications, Sinamics S drives also implement drive-side position interpolation (DCS functionality implemented with ProfiDrive telegram 105). Without it, positioning accuracy is reduced and most likely will not be sufficient for PATH type applications. A bus converter will not work because networks will not be synchronous and the converter itself will introduce an additional time delay. Analog control may be an alternative to consider in this case.

However i have not seen any actual application with this configuration. We had planned a Rotary cutter using SIMOTION and 6RA80 ( Motor was already installed ) but then dropped the idea as we were not 100% sure about it. Finally used a AC Servo with S120. Cheers Navnag

DenisMor Posts: 344 Rating: (50)	In case of the Sinamics DCM 6RA80, it can be configured to communicate to Simotion via PROFIBUS or PROFINET with ProfiDrive telegram 1 or 2. The DC drive will operate in speed mode. There needs to be an additional encoder mounted on the machine or the motor and connected directly to Simotion (Profinet IRT or DriveCLiQ) for position loop control. This setup is subject to all performance limitations listed above, but typically it is used on retrofit applications for larger systems (100HP and above) where a customer does not want to replace the existing DC motor. The resulting Simotion system performance is comparable to existing DC motor dynamic response making it a viable solution. For smaller systems with high dynamic response an AC motor/servo solution is recommended.

In hindsight, i think, we took the correct decision of replacing the motor as customer wanted a much superior performance than the existing system with DC Motor Cheers Navnag
