Sinamics S120 or G120?

hi there

I want to replace the Unidrive Drives by Sinamics drives of a Coil Pickling line, Where there is metal sheet uncoiler motor(100KW), Edge trimmer motors(11KW), recoiler motors(200KW).

Attached is a typical picture of the pickling line...

Ques is should i use Sinamics S120 or G120? Please let me know this info.

also do you guys have any documents/link stating sinamics s & G application areas for metal industries?

I would use S120 if you have coilers/uncoilers.

1.  With common DC link configuration, the regenerative braking energy is most efficiently transferred to the recoiler torque producing energy.   You have limited regeneration options with G120 and your uncoiler is always regenerating.

2. Coiler control is easily handled using DCC options packages .

The auxiliary drives (side trimmers, leveler if it's driven) can be G120, since they are simple speed controllers, but I would put encoders on the motors.

The Selection between S120 and G120 will usually depend on your budget.
Both can do the job however performance levels will vary.

No doubt, S120 will deliver better performance ( At a higher cost ).
However generally pickling line controls are not so demanding and G120 can do the job at a lower cost.

We have automated Pickling / Annealing / Continuous Galvanising lines with SINAMICS G120 without any significant loss of performance. Since these are lines with slow dynamics, you can even operate the drives in Encoderless vector control.

You will need PM250 Power Modules for Regenerative drives ( e.g. Uncoilers )

Whether you use G120 or S120, I would recommend you to use a PLC ( S7-300 / S7-1200 / S7-1500 ) for doing the basic calculations for Speed / Tension / Diameter calculations. This makes commissioning and troubleshooting much faster and easier and all drives can be commissioned as standard drives.

Unrelated to the question, that looks more like a small shot blasting line than a pickling line.  Looks like the recoiler must be speed controlled. 

 Exactly ... looks more like Post  processing of pickeled coils.

What is the biggest you can get with a PM250?  Last time I checked it was 90KW.  OP's uncoiler is 100KW which means it is more like 200 KW.

 You are right .. I didn't notice the Motor ratings.
