Hello how come? To make the basic concepts clear, you could look at the attached presentation on fiber optics fundamentals from Clipsal. You will see the differences in geometry, allowed modes 9specific frequencies inside the fiber) and attenuation/km that distinguishes multimode fiber from singlemode fiber. Singlemode fiber allows only one frequency inside the fiber, has a much smaller core and less attenuation than multimode. Because of this: 1) singlemode fiber can send signals much farther than multimode ; also, plastic multimode fibers can only use segments of around 80m, while glass multimode fibers can go up to 400m. Single mode fibers (always glass) can send signals much further, from 3 to 15 km without repeaters; sometimes even further. OLMs can only adapt the the fiber specs 2) and 3) singlemode and multimode fibers cannot be mixed in a network., unless using some form of transition equipment. Here are a few points discussed on this issue in the Profibus OLM manual, v. 4:

I Have attached a file which gives basic difference between SM amd MM. There was never a clear "yes" from any one about using SM OLM with MM and MM OLM with SM. But, recently i have seen a catalogue entry where it shows that SM OLM can be used with MM cable. Please check https://mall.automation.siemens.com/WW/guest/index.asp?aktPrim=0&nodeID=9300043&mlfb=6GK1503%2D2CA00&aktTab=4&lang=en but thedistance range goes down. MM OLM on SM cable is not possible as it can not inject light. AttachmentMultimode_Singlemode_extract.zip (718 Downloads) |
