sinking and sourcing concept

Mothilal Posts: 165 Rating: (25)	hello experts and all I have a doubt in sinking and sourcing .I know this sinking and sourcing conceptbut mydoubt is ,why should we consider this concept during wiring of I/O? If it is not taken into account, will it damage the PLC? Whycant we connectall the inputs are 24V instead of 0V? Noramally we are connecting various kind of inputs and output to the plc (PUSH BUTTON, SENSOR(PNP/NPN) ,LIMIT SWITCHES, RELAYS, ..etc). Sinking is suitable for what kind of input/output and sourcing is suitable for what kind of input and output devices? please let me know!! Regards Mothilal

nbk Posts: 197 Rating: (3)	In case of O/P Modules, Siemens is using PNP and NPN configured transistors at its O/P stage. Can we not connect the load to the Emitter of PNP Transistor in order to operate it as a Sinking O/P rather than Sourcing? Similarly, in case of NPN Transistor, can we not connect the load to its Emitter to make it Sourcing instead of sinking? I'm not sure if it is advisable to do so (or will it lead to any kind of damage) ..... but just a bit curious ! (Or is it all about the "load has to be always on the Collector terminal" and so we have to accept this sourcing and sinking arrangement?) Plz bear with my question. Thanks in advance. Regards
