Is there a specific certification or course requirements for programming SIL3 and safety systems. Does Siemens provides that certification or it needs to be certified from outside agency.

Hello Lucky; There are certifications for Functional Safety Engineering available from different standards providers, TÜV Rheinland, ISA, Exida... The following links will give you an idea of the contents of the training provided and, in the first source, relative costs and requirements: ISA's SIS Certificate Programs vs other Safety Recognition Programs Functional Safety Trainings | TÜV Rheinland - TUV Overview - CFSE / CFSP - Certified Functional Safety Expert (Exida) Training and examinations are offered worldwide, look in the websites of the certifiers for classes near you. Siemens even offers a Safety Engineering certification training in collabotraion with TÜV: TUV Certification - Automation Technology US - Siemens Now the second aspect of your question is: is this type of certification necessary in order to take charge of a Safety program in your own projects? Expertise is always recommended (necessary) when working with Safety systems, but expertise and certification are not the same thing. Always remember that Safety systems are used to protect personnel from injury and death in an industrial setting, so there is personal responsibility involved when programming an SIS for an oil and gas rig or an overhead crane. But that knowledge can be developed with experience and work with experts in the field. Training will give you a greater (and faster) grasp of the fundamentals, as in any other certification. But you will have to deternine if the cost of the certificate will be compensated by the appreciation of your employer(s) of your expertise. Hope this helps, Daniel Chartier |
