Spindle motor switchover on 8x0D systems

mab Posts: 23 Rating: (3)	Hello Experts, I'm currently involved in a project where we are about to retrofit a grinding machine. It's going to be equipped with one additional headstock for small rolls. I've read through the documentation and found out that there exists a motor changeover function on Simodrive 611U. Using this function we could use the same main spindle drive for both headstocks. Each headstock would have it's own 1PH7 motor. This way we could also have just one main spindle axis on the Sinumerik because the two headstocks would never be operated at the same time. Each headstock would have it's own direct measuring system. When changing from one headstock to another we would then on the Sinumerik system switchover from measuring system 1 to 2 and from parameter set 1 to 2 and additionally execute the motor switchover funtion. My question is, how does the motor switchover funtion handle the encoders on the 1PH7 motors? The drive needs the speed feedback from the motor. It's clear from the documentation how the motor connections work, but what about the encoders?Should I connect both motor encoders to a two axis control board or what? The two direct encoder connections are not a problem they can be routed through any additional control boards. Any experience anyone?

TSH Posts: 73 Rating: (2)	Hello Have a look at the following link, in the manual "Extended drive functions" section 2.3 http://www.automation.siemens.com/doconweb/content.asp?item=9603&cd=sinumerik_simodrive_10_2008_e&scope=all Basically you can use the same drive but switch the motor in via contactors. It is important that the contactors are switched correctly Good luck

Actually i was already familiar with this information, but section "2.5 Motor changeover on synchronous motors" had some additional information about how encoder connections are handled. So the sequence of operations and the answer to my questions seems to be: - The motor encoders must be identical - The axis is set as parking axis before switchover ofencoders/motors - The encoders are switched over through relays at the same time the motors are switched over through contactors Great, we have a solution! but the documentation could a bit more clear about this...
