Standby Redundancy with MRP instead of HSR

(Link) Is it possible to use standby redundancy together with MRP protocol instead of HSR. I would like to join a number of MRP rings using standby redundnacy. Each MRP ring would contain only profinetI/O modules or CPUs and the switches (x204IRT and X310)required forfor thestandby redundancy. Attached is a drawing of the network I wish to implement. Could let us know if there is some reason you have chosen this configuration. Without knowing the background, I would suggest that all the A devices are connect one 204s and the B devices to one 204s and then all switches are in a ring implemented with MRP protocol.(or alternatively with HSR.). About the question whether mixing MRP and HSR is possible in one network, HSR is few steps higher in redundancy than MRP, I presume it cannot coexist together.MRP detects hardware failure through the "heartbeat" and sends packets in the other direction. IN HSR right from start packets are sent in both directions. Or did I misunderstand the question Krish.

brent Posts: 6 Rating: (0)	We are not wanting to mix HSR and MRP, we are wanting to mix MRP with standby redundancy. The reason for setting up the network like this is to achieve the same level of redundancy shown in the video I linked, however with using ET200pro profinet modules which support MRP not HSR. Each MRP ring shown in my drawing is in a separate physical location, and the reason for combining A & B devices on a single network is to reduce the number of switches required. The system consists of two identical reduntant systems A & B which will run in parallel. At least one of the systems must be available at all times.The network design I am trying to achive is a system where failure of any single device (switch, I/O module, CPU etc) still leaves at least one system able to run (including communication back to the SCADA / Historian). If combining MRP and Standby redundancy is not possible, my next option would probably be to have two independent MRP rings, however this would require more cabling.

Hi, Just to give you a clear answer on your question: MRP can't be combined with Standby Communication. To answer your question about creating a highly redundant network. I don't think the idea you have now is the best. The hardware redundancy you've created is nice if it could work you've every component connected twice. To bad Standby cannot be combined with MRP. But what you did forget is what would happen is something goes wrong on the network. Somebody plugs in another device with a duplicated IP, somebody plugs in with a defect ethernet card, one of the devices has an error. Then the complete network would fail instantly. Because of this I would prefer to create 2 separated networks to get a higher redundancy. Good luck with your decision.
