Step 5 online errors

ja21pu Posts: 5 Rating: (0)	I know this question is being asked before My client has an Acer Travel Mate (with Windows XP Professional installed) with a COM port and Step 5 installed. When he tries to go online connected with a serial cable to a PLC he gets 2 errors "Overflow in data exchange with PG" or "Undefined character from AS" Step 5 was previously installed on another laptop with Windows XP on and didn’t give such errors but unfortunately the COM port on that laptop is faulty. Please assist me with this problem What changes must be made in the program or on the COM port settings. Regards

safety4ever Experienced Member Joined: 12/5/2006 Last visit: 4/12/2023 Posts: 73 Rating: (4)	I have seen this error sometimes happening with CPU's with dual serial ports when you connect make sure you connect mainly to SI 1 not to SI 2, this error happens most of the time if you try to connect to SI2.Have you used this port forany other communication before? Be carfull also if you have other SW like for example RSLinx services runningin the background this might lock the port in this case try to stop the services running. If this is all not helpingtry to check if there are any interrupts conflict with any other devices on the PC. good luck

ja21pu Posts: 5 Rating: (0)	If I open Step 5 it shows something about COM1, the laptop only has 1 COM port, I don't have any knowledge about Step 5, I haven't looked if another program uses the same COM port, I will go back to the client on monday and have a check Regards

safety4ever Experienced Member Joined: 12/5/2006 Last visit: 4/12/2023 Posts: 73 Rating: (4)	If step 5 does show a message once you open it about the COM port that means it is not something related to the PLC it might be as I mentioned to you a conflict in your COM port usage. Try to get the reason this conflict is existing, could you get also the message you get about the COM port when the Step 5 starts? Is it message 0334 that you get?

I've had a look at the compatibility of STEP 5 versions with windows operating systems, it only says that you must have windows xp professional sp1 or sp2 . Step 5 ver 7.23 What now? Will it work on Windows XP Media Centre Edition with sp3 Regards Jaco

It might still work though since I have seen those issues you are talking about for other reasons. Try to eliminiate any other possibilities as I mentioned to you in my previous threads if this is still nor working then we have nothing else to look after except the compatibility with the SP3. ja21pu Posts: 5 Rating: (0)	The following is being done formated the Acer laptop, fresh installation of Windows XP Professional SP2 (no windows updates is done nor any acer software is installed) Still the same errors, can't connect Spent 1 day on the phone, trying to sort out this problem, client very upset I phoned overseas, but only get the reaction from Siemens that I have to pay to get someone to speak to me, otherwise wait for 48hours till someone can phone me back - talk about service... Spoken to Siemens technical people here in South Africa, but I think I know more than they do... Eventually got through to Siemens repair centre and spoke to a chap that's willing to test the cable and laptop if I send it to him, he confirmed that the cable is working but that something is wrong on the laptops side ( before it were formated, other programs on it worked fine and even the Comm port were working). This is his results: The S5 USB cable (generic cable) works on the ACER laptop, the software connects to the plc - the client must buy the usb cable & The ACER laptop is not compatible with the Siemens Software and recommend that the Client must either use a Siemens or Dell laptop. If the software can only work on certian brands, then count me out What to do now?

playerslight Posts: 1064 Rating: (72)	Another thing you could check is make sure in the bios that the serial port is set to 3f78 and irq 4 . sometimes the ports are set differently
