TIA Portal what MUST absolutely be improved!!!???

 Do you mean over all parts of TIA or in pages such as hardware config?

I have noticed that in hardware config type of windows you need to put the mouse cursor into a textbox (not a droplist etc), then i can scroll that view.

I wonder if it is possible for the developers to make the TIA windows compatible with a scroll mouse wheel?
Every windows program I have used that has scroll bars works with a scroll mouse, so why should TIA be the exception. It is really frustrating. Have the developers actually used their creation at all I wonder? If not, then maybe they should. The prove of the pudding is in the eating as they say in English.

What we noticed today.

On our operator panels, we also installed tia portal for maintenence people can fault trace at the lines.

This week we are going to upgrade all RT and Tia programs to V13 Sp 2 (From sp1, upd 9).

Our first two test areas (including one engineering station in the office) The Tia V13 Sp2 Prof update fails with unknown errors inthe logs ruining tia portal.

A complete uninstall does not work.

We concluded at tia Openness tools, if installed CAN break the upgrade procedure, but also stuff in temp folder can ruin.

We had to resort to use Siemens software Inventory Management to completely wipe out tia portal from the panels and computers, to be able to upgrade/install V13 SP2.

1) Doesn't directly support S120 CU310-2 "block" style drives. Cannot understand this. Fairly new drive.

2) I don't understand why they show the logo frame around the HMI when editing. Big space waster on your edit screen.

3) With Omron and Rockwell, I can drag unused items off the visible portion of the screen (in case I am not sure I want to delete them or not; also handy when jiggling things around)

4) Pretty slow on my fast laptop.

5) A lot of windows, with frames, borders, gackgoos and thingamajigs. Seems to take a lot of screen space. Need to simplify, rationalize, reduce.

6) Alarms map as words in HMI, bytes in PLC, get the swapped bytes. Confusing.

After being using Step7 for 10 years, I start to use TIA

Hopefully, my colleagues tried it first (TIA v13) and cleaned up the mess !

We are now at TIAv15, and improvements have been made, noticeably on stability. We have far less crash than with previous versions !

However, I'm still missing some basics things, here is a short list to help Siemens developers (sorry I should says TIA developers !)

- Can you give us the ability to define our own keyboard shortcuts  ?

It really frustrating to use Step7 and TIA at the same time, with different shortcuts. For instance : Step7 : Ctrl+E : go to network has been changed to Ctrl+G in TIA, while Ctrl+E in TIA means delete your project ! Why the hell did you change that ???

CTRL+SHIFT+Q : in Step7 => allows to display mementos adress. In TIA : allow to STOP the CPU !!!!

F2/F3/F7/F8/F9 in Step7 was easy to edit ladder networks. With the fu.. change to Shift+F2/F3/F7/F8/F9 in TIA ??

- in Windows software, TAB and Shift+TAB allows to change the windows inside a software. Why in TIA are you using Ctrl+F6 ???

- In Step7 : Ctrl+Shift+F : find text going down / Ctrl+Shift+B  :find text going up => in TIA : Ctrl+Shift+F : find text going down / Ctrl+Shift+G : find text going up !!

- In Step7  :Ctrl+1 or Ctrl+2 allows to switch from list view to ladder view of a network. Can you give us this possibility again ? (It's very useful when lots of network are generated as external source using excel macro for instance...)

- Design : in TIA view, please remove unused banner ! It should be designed for programming, not for beauty, we don't give a shit about banners alignments !

- Please give us the program tree on the left, like in Step7 v5.5 !

- Can we have the possibility to force reloading online of a FB/FC/DB ? It will be much easier than to open the DB online, and initialize it !

- Comparison between function : only possible inside a project/with a reference project or online/offline. Much complicated between two offline projects (because you need to run two instance of TIA...) So you need first to close your project, and open it as reference project...

- Comparison : if you find differences between two function, you need to close the comparison tool before editing your function... Not very useful

- Attached is a screen shot of what happened yesterday : TIA delete 3 networks ! But it tells it to you !!

- Multi users : it's bullsh.. I lost 3 days of work because of it. It's complicated, it needs a server with multi user management... plus, not all parts of the project are multi users (hardware configuration is not, adding CPU is not, network configuration is not..., same for Touch panels... I've not tried drives, but I guess it's the same...) The "flag" management has been improved, but it's clearly not the solution. We now develop one PLC per project, with it's own touch panel !

- Can we have again the possiblity to force DB numbers and DB name when using external source ? (even if I know Siemens guys don't won't us to use DB number and addresses anymore )

Actually, can we have again a "mementos" table that includes everything (FB, FC, DB, M, MW, MD, E, PE, PEW, A, PAW...) so we can edit easily name or number ?

One good point / improvement of TIA however :

-the ability in TIA to save even with "error" in the code. In Step7 you need clean code to save OB/FB/FC

I hope all these points will be improved  before version 25 of TIA...

i work in the automation market sice 1994 i work with many software but NEVER i see a big f**** sh*** like TIA portal is completely unusable.

I love siemens PLC. their functionality are excellent. The programming disastrous.
I want to tell you with my post what MUST absolutely be improved.

1. latency - All software sleep i work like a sloth.

2 On-line: why i need 1 minuts before go on/line? (with ethernet cable)?

3. Multy Language -> import/export crash every time. Unbelive latency in manual editation

4. All keyboard shortcuts changed respect Step7

5. V12 not compatible with V11

6. V12 not have Safety

It's because of the JAVA platform. Even if TIA is running on a Siemens PG M5 laptop (8-thread Pentium i7 + 32GB RAM DDR4) it is not smooth and sometimes you have to wait for the reaction/response. I'm using it.

My co-worker is depressed because of this 

Currently, we have v15.1 but I meet some problems:

1. S7-300 added as device proxy is not listed during creating a definition of new Profinet connection with S7-1500,
2. Copying of some FB is not fully supported

Edit 5th march 2020 :

- TIA v15.1 : 30 minutes for full installation of a new TIA software (it does not replace TIA v15, it install a full new version...)

- Possibility to create zap file with project close : GREAT !

- Possibility to assign your own keyboard shortcuts !!

- However, when "zapping" in TIAv15_1, the zap file is 2 time bigger than the same project zapped in TIAv15, really strange (even if you check the box "reject generated data" when zapping)

- Still not possible to search and replace in a selected area / from this point...

- TIAv15.1 takes 1Gb of RAM memory just to open, without opening any project !!

- Installation of HSP : still not a check box to "select all"...

I hope TIA v16 will correct more bugs / gives more flexibility to users

Too many triangles for expanding or collapsing networks and tree structures: it's tolerable if you are using a mouse, but it's very uneasy if you are on the field with only the touchpad. At least make them bigger!!

Too many windows, a lot of them are hidden by default: in the device configuration I dscovered the lateral window after months of TIA usage!

Generally speaking TIA is totally mouse-dependant, you need mouse for almost everything and this is a major slowdown for me and it's a pity beacuse TIA made a lot of good points.

I would like to rant as well.

I was using Visual Studio before TIA so when i stareted using it i was supprised how slow IntelliSense is and how wrong. Everything is so slow. And Downloading programm to PLC is so long too many stepsm Accpet this click Next bla bla. I have nothing against thats but when i do dev R&D i dont care if my dbs zero out if i click Download i want Compile -> Download -> Done. In my oppinion siemens is reinventing wheel, but ouput is squre. Only things i like about siemens is Plug n Play like drive commisioning but yeah programming is horrible, its ment for kids not for real software devs. I love C/C+ and C# and when you know what you can do with them and then you sit and look TIA you are like for love of god why is this a thing.
