Upload Online Project to an Offline Step 7 File

MatthewR Posts: 12 Rating: (0)	This is probably a no brainer for most of you Siemens gurus, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to do it. I have an existing offline version of a Step 7 program and need to get a current copy of what's running in the processor right now. When I choose 'Upload Station to PG' it grabs a current copy but instead of updating my offline copy, it creates a new processor and throws it all in there with no symbols, comments, etc. How do I get my offline copy updated to what's currently running online? Thanks!

Lucky123 Gold Member Joined: 12/20/2008 Last visit: 8/25/2022 Posts: 556 Rating: (236)	I had the same problem, one of the Siemens tech support guy told me its not possible, I know its very easy in Control Logix, I would be happy to hear the answer from any expert on this, as I too have lot of data blocks already documented, and I have lot of other comments in the program which I want to keep but I don't find the way to do it either. fritz Diamond Expert Joined: 10/7/2005 Last visit: 6/6/2023 Posts: 2966 Rating: (1025)	Dear all the "problem's" you face are perceived problems and can easily be solved in a number of ways. 1.) This FAQ explains how "grab" online DB's: How can you back up the actual values of DBs and bit memories? 2.) An alternative way to the above one is to do this: a.) Open the DB offline b.) Click on the "Open Offline/Online Partner" shortcut icon (third icon from the left)and open the online DB. c.) Click on the "Save" shortcut icon to save the current online actual values as the offline actual actual values 3.) As for uploading logic Blocks (i.e OB's, FC's & FB's) from the PLC, this is something I wouldn't do, but instead make sure my offline logic blocks are up to date (and achieve this by making sure to always change the logic offline followed by asaveand download). You can easily verify if the offline logic Blocks are the same as the online ones via an offline/onlinecomparison. To do so, right click on a block (or a number of Blocks) and select "Compare Blocks.."(useF1 while your mouse cursor is over the "Compare Blocks.."line to get the inbuilt help for it). If the offline logic is up to date there is obviously no need to upload it from the PLC. If differences exist, Step 7 will very neatly display these which helps in fixing them up. Lastly, doing the whole "Upload Station to PG.." will simply create a pure online logic/data "snapshot" which is not all that useful for further editing (as you know you won't have symbols nor comments). It can however be useful to create for example an emergency recovery backup. I always do so as the first step if I have to work on "someone elses"S7 on site somewhere to be able to "roll back" if need be. Ihope this helps

I think this should be proposed as a suggestion for siemens for future software upgrade, if possible. Thanks Lalit

As a guy with mainly Rockwell Automation experience <insert insult here> I can also atest to the ease of uploading a project with their software. This whole update problem really becomes evident when you get on site and the client has an old copy of a program to a system that's been supported by someone else for years. There could be modifications in every OB, FB, FC, and DB. I was talking with a local Siemens rep and he advised to do something similar to what's mentioned in your first point Fritz. When you go online to the processor the offline project stays in a window behind it. You can tile the windows, select all the blocks in the online version, then drag and drop to the offline version. I haven't tested this, but from the description in the link above it should work. My only concern if it does work is I don't think the hardware setup would be updated by using this method. I guess you could just go online with the HWConfig and update it that way. This is better then nothing but you'd think Siemens, being an industry leader like they are, would have an easier way to do this. Just my opinion!
