USB to RS232 converter to establish between my Siwarex and Programming Laptop

Hello Experts,

I too need to communicate with siwarex modules. My laptop too doesn't have any Serial Port...Can i use a generic USB to RS232 converter to establish between my Siwarex and Programming Laptop.

For example of generic converter refer to the one described at below link.

1) USB/RS-232 converter availability

I was curious so I clicked on the link above which sent me to a Siemens page.

I clicked on the link for where the converter could be purchased and that link went to a page that said "not available".

I have never connected to Siwarex, whatever that is, but I've done hundreds of USB/RS-232 connections in the past 10-15 years.

I use USB/RS-232 converters that use the FTDI chipset.   FTDI registers their chipset with Microsoft.  Whatever you think of Microsoft, it pays to have a communications device registered with them because the drivers ALWAYS work.   I have never had an installation issue with a USB/RS-232 converter with an FTDI chipset.

There are unquestionably cheaper converters, but like my Daddy said, "you get what you pay for".

2)  Virtual COM port

A USB/RS-232 converter installs in Windows on a virtual COM port.   After it is installed (drivers installed), and is plugged in, you need to find the COM port the converter is installed on by going to Control Panel > Device Manager > Ports, opening Ports and seeing determining which COM port the USB  converter is on.

If you plug the USB/232 converter into different USB ports, it will install on different COM ports.  I always plug my converter into the same port so it gets the same COM port.

When you attempt serial communications from a Windows app, somewhere there is a selection for the COM port in use, and that COM port has to match the COM port used by the converter.

Yes you can use generic usb to serial converter...

 I just bought FTDI cable (USB-RS232) and try to connect to siwarex cs but it's not working. anything for me to check? thanks.
