In case of FO cable - is using OLM device. (The PROFIBUS OLMs are designed for use in optical PROFIBUS field bus networks. They enable the conversion of electrical PROFIBUS interfaces (RS485) into optical PROFIBUS interfaces and vice versa.) best regards, Hristo Mihalev

It is used to extend the communication length for profibus by using fiber cables which don't suffer from any electrical or magnetic interference as copper cable do. Repeater is used to strengthen the signal for communication cables over long distances, because due to the long distance the communication signal suffers from attenuation. It has to be put every specific length of communication cable or else signal will not reach its destination,
