1. VB is very fast and supports a lot of Hardware. Simatic Software is running very well in a virtual box. It is free of Charge, just need a registration. 2. The Google - keyword is "XP Mode". Perhaps, XP-Mode is not supported any more by Win8...? I found a link for you: http://www.intowindows.com/xp-mode-in-windows-8/ |

On some older machines, I did notice that VMWare Workstation works (a bit) faster than VMWare Player. Do you have the same experience? |

Dear SteBo I have only tried VMWare Player once but quickly switched over to Vmware Workstation due to its obvious advantages ... Maybe what you have notices is right, but I have not really felt the difference. Cheers Navnag |

I'm using VM Workstation on my laptop a lot, laptop has 8GB RAM but most VM's are only assigned 1GB RAM, working smoothly, unless you want to have several VM's open at the same time. At home, I have a PC with only 4GB and VM Workstation works better on it than VM Player. |

might be but baremetal ESXi server with dedicated machines isn't an option for people working for random customers, you see us taking a baremetal ESXi server in our backpack on the road daily? |

I think n00delsstressed on "for testing purposes". We need not have big setup of Servers / Cients during testing / development, Virtual Machines within abaremetal ESXi server can do the job. Cheers Navnag |

It is very interesting topic that I joined it late!!! Using virtual machine is a must when playing with Siemens software. Thanks to Siemens to have all these HUGE library of software that makes you proud to have multiple solutions available for each project!!! As a disadvantage of this HUGE library, each month you are noticed by a new Hot fix, Update, Service Pack and new version of each software. This requires having a powerfulcompatibility toolto check compatibility of required software versions; which leads you to have different operating systems that requires virtual machines. Back to the thread I found a new tip mentioned byIBN-Service:
when I open the link I found new feature which is "Unity" that I want to focus on it:

Dear Khaled_Ezzat Microsoft seems to have removed "Win-XP" mode from WIndows-8 / 8.1. There are workarounds for this on the Net, but frankly, I would advise you against it. It is better to use a tested Virtual machine like "Vmware" than using such workarounds, to avoid running into unknown compatibility issues. Hope this helps Cheers Navnag |

Hello Jürgen You can import a Windows Virtual PC virtual machine and run it inWorkstation.Workstationconverts the virtual machine from Virtual PC (.vmc) format to VMware runtime (.vmx) format. This feature is supported only on Windows host systems. Prerequisites Download and install the Virtual PC virtual machine on the Windows host system. Procedure In Workstation, select File>Open. If you have never imported a third-party virtual machine or virtualized a physical machine in Workstation, Workstation installs VMware vCenter Converter Standalone. After the installation is finished, you must restart the import. Browse to the.vmcfile and clickOpen. Type a name for the virtual machine, type or browse to the directory for the virtual machine files, and clickImport. After Workstation successfully imports the Virtual PC virtual machine, the virtual machine appears in the virtual machine library. ---------------------------------- You can import a Windows XP Mode virtual machine and run it in Workstation Player. When you import a Windows XP Mode virtual machine, Workstation Player creates a new virtual machine in VMware runtime (.vmx) format. You can power on only one Windows XP Mode virtual machine at a time in Workstation Player. If you move a Windows XP Mode virtual machine to another host system, it becomes a new virtual machine and you must activate it. Note Changes made to the original Windows XP Mode virtual machine through Virtual PC do not affect the virtual machine imported in Workstation Player. Prerequisites Verify that the Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate edition operating system is running on the host system. Importing Windows XP Mode virtual machines is not supported on Linux host systems or on host systems that are running other versions of Windows. Download and install the Windows XP Mode virtual machine on the host system. Procedure Select File > Open and browse to the virtual machine configuration (.vmc) file. If you have never virtualized a physical machine or imported a third-party virtual machine in Workstation Player, you need to download and install VMware vCenter Converter Standalone. After the VMware vCenter Converter Standalone installation is finished, you must restart the import. Type a name for the new virtual machine, type or browse to the directory for the virtual machine files, and click Import. Workstation Player begins importing the Windows XP Mode virtual machine. After Workstation Player successfully imports the Windows XP Mode virtual machine, a new virtual machine appears in the virtual machine library. --------------------------------------- Hope this helps Cheers Navnag |
