Dorftrottel? Silver Member Joined: 8/10/2006 Last visit: 8/13/2024 Posts: 298 Rating: (29)	I've used VMWare in instances as Client, Server and ES/OS connected to PLC via Ethernet or with PLCSim. Works great, although agonizingly slow on some machines. (you do want fast hardware, lots of RAM and BIG hard drives with plenty of space - I typically set up my VMs with 20GB) Although I do not recommend it as the point for where you do development (ES), I use it for testing functionality, interoperability with other software programs or modifying my OS system in a way that if I break it, I don't care.

JeffSibley Posts: 15 Rating: (3)	Process to load licenses on our host pc (for example your corp laptop) and be able to serve licenses to your VM's. This way you can still work offline (not connected to the network license servers described in the original post / Summit presentation. majic Posts: 47 Rating: (0)	This is maybe a step backwards, but does this also work with ALM 2.1? I'm using ALM 2.1 + HF1 and I can connect to the VM IP address from the Host machine, the Guest machine can ping the host, but is unable to connect to the Host PC's ALM

JeffSibley Posts: 15 Rating: (3)	I am using ALM 3.0 + SP1 but I see no good reason why older ALM's will not work. It may be that MS Virtural PC is doing some authication. Try creating an account on both the host and VM with matching username and pw (same thing we have to do to get OPC to work between a domain member and a standalone workgroup member. If that doesn’t do the trick then try connecting to the IPC$ share of the host from the VM (at the command prompt). This may give you some additional information… net use \\ host IP \ipc$ /user:LocalAccount * Let us know if this works… Good Luck; Jeff

Genglish Posts: 7 Rating: (0)	I have looked around, and probably just not hit the right document yet, but I am looking for some information. I have a customer who is currently running PCS7 V6.1. The would like to replace their redundant OS with PCs running VM Server software. Any clue if this is supported? Has anyone ever tried it? Also note that the customer may be upgrading to PCS7 V7.0 in the next few months. Any help is appreciated.

JeffSibley Posts: 15 Rating: (3)	This issue was discussed at the Siemens Users Summit but both Siemens and the users present didn't think this was a good idea. It certainly is not a supported configuration (neither is VMWare & PCS 7, just ask the TIC line). We only use VMWare for our development but we do run PLCSim and WinCC to test or applications, so a runtime OS will function under VMWare. * I would do a lot of testing before I ran this in production… If you are only going to do this until your upgrade, I would think hard about skipping this step.

I personally did not even want to discuss it with the customer at all, but I am merely the Engineer who will be responsible for making "it" work...whatever that "it" may be at the current time. It was the fairly uninformed Salesman that thought it was a great way to add on another line item when the customer mentioned it... As for it not being a supported config...that is what I am looking for. I know there is a PC configuration manual or something of the sorts that specifies PC hardware/software requirements for the PCS7 PCs. I am just having trouble finding it for some reason! Thanks for the quick reply though Jeff. On a side note, the presentation is interesting and I will be setting up a test PC with a similar configuration for our internal testing in the near future! Thanks for the info!
