Built in IO, ethernet is built in, Web server is built in, can use ethernet port to do multiple different communications(HMI,Peer to peer, and Modbus over ethernet) add any kind of IO modules. Also, there is the TIA basic software which is very cost effective, instead of buying fullsoftware. Even SCL can be used with these little babies with alot of the same functions as the bigger PLC's. Advantage: cost, size, significant capability, multiple hardware options, controls S & G drives via profinet or profibus or analog/digital - whichever you like. Disadvantage: limited I/O bandwidth, local I/O max of 8 modules, can't use a lot of the existing work done for s7-300/400 in STL, processing speed - but getting even a large project to run under 10 ms scan time is common. I have been using the s7-1200's since 2010. They have come a long way. Mostly though, it has been the portal that has gone fromvery buggy wide-alpha release to the current beta release they call V13. The reason I say beta release is they must have debug code still in the program because it is slower than a dead dog (my apologies to all dead dogs as most of them are faster than Portal). It has gotten faster over the years but it still slows me (and virtually everyone else who uses it) down. Portal is the single biggest disadvantage to using the s7-1200 & s7-1500 family of PLCs. We complain and it incrementally gets better, but we want and need 2 orders of magnitude improvement. We are using multi-core CPUs with loads of memory, 64-bit, and a multi-threading operating system, and we still have to wait longer to boot than Windows NT took in the 90's.

To be fair to the real base question it is very much depending on what application you have in mind for the PLC system. When talking about the S7-1200 system it is not only the PLC but also the software (TIA). It is mostly the TIA software with which people have a problem with. The disadvantage of the S7-1200 comes mostly in the use of the software. The irony is that it is the TIA software that is destined to become the software standard for all Siemens systems. There is the promise to be the best integrated system available. For machine clusters having a not too high I/O count, that need to be future-in-mind - the S7-1200 is ideal. The novice system builder will find it easier in general to configure. Functions such as integration of PLC and panel as well as motion control Knowing what you plan for the PLC would focus this discussion, if we require more information. Greetings. w

Still I enjoy using it, it's modern, packed with all kind of handy features. and for me, the 1200 PLC gets almost any job done. Ofcourse it depends on what application you want to realise. We are using it for the most simple tasks (We're not even considering logo plc's for this, the 1200 is much more advanced, and still low cost). and also using it in bigger projects: - 3 HMI (one of them could be hot plugged at different locations) - 2 scanners communicating over TCP/IP - 10 Profinet remote IO devices - +/- 500 Inputs and 500 outputs No performance issues or whatsoever. Biggest advantage: - Programming software isnt expensive, but its modern with lots of features and allows you to program HMI devices. - Build in Ethernet port. can be used to setup TCP/IP communications and profinet. - Price! - Din rail mountable.

But let me highlight the following. I don't consider that limited number of IOs is a disadvantage for sssS7-1200. Thus because Siemens have many families which covers all requirements. In my opinion, LOGO! PLC is perfect for too simple applications. S7-1200 is perfect as well for limited and centralized IOs applications and it have many benifits in machine automation applications. S7-1200 should be compared with other brands PLCs of similar performance range. Every Brand has his own design, price and performance, I think comparising Siemens with another brand won't help showing the advantages and disadvantages of the s71200, I think a test would be better to check the performance.
