It is just that instead of using the RS485 protocol to access the media as in the normal profibus, the media acess protocols are implemented on Ethernet. Krish

While the master (PC or PLC) uses a standard NIC hardware,slave devices are using special hardware ASIC FPGA or DSP to route packets from one port to other. They also need tochange data on the fly, while receiving data on one port they exctract data and change/route forwardon the fly, you will notice that profinet has some delay for each device. A profinet master is cheap running with ordinary NIC, while slave device is very expensive.

IsaSalimi Posts: 16 Rating: (3)	Hello, According to PI, Profinet is an open Ethernet standard designed to be “real-time Ethernet.” It has two models: The component model or Profinet CBA, and the peripherals model or Profinet IO. The transmission times of the two models are different. Also, there are three different protocol levels in Profinet that are differentiated by speed: • Profinet CBA, for a plant needing reaction times in the range of 100ms, uses TCP/IP. • Profinet CBA and IO applications needing up to 10ms cycle times use the RT (Real-Time) protocol. • Profinet IO applications in drive systems for motion control use the IRT (Isochronous Real-Time) protocol for cycle times of less than 1 ms.
