What is the difference between scales.

It is general technical question. Since I found so many experts here, I am just raising this question. In linear feedback scale systems, there are photo-sensor or photoelectric & magnetic scales. What is the difference between these two types? Means how one can distinguish between these two types in-terms of application, accuracy, selection point of view etc. Your reply comments are highly appreciated/welcome. Thanks in advance. DEEP

DEEP Hi Deep, 1] Disadvantage of Magnetic tape is that it can very easily be corrupted by a magnetic force.But in photo electric it is not possible. 2] Magnetic tape measure can become difficult to use when it is used over long distances.But Linear scale is easy to fix. 3] Magnetic tape will be easily affected by dust.But linear scale with Photo sensor is well protected . 4] Photo sensor accuracy will be more , when compare to Magnetic tape. 5] Photo Electric linear scale is expensive, when compared to Magnetic tape. 6] Position accuracy is High, when compare to Magnetic tape. 7] Travelling speed is High, when compared to Magnetic tape. 8] For CNC feed back, linear scale with photo electric is the best. For DRO we can use Magnetic tape. And find the attached file of Photo sensor in linear scale. Attachment Photo sensor.pdf (151 Downloads)

makaveli Posts: 259 Rating: (5)	I agree with 99% with Muthamizh Selvan. Only 3rd point form me is a little questionable. You cannot say that magnetic tape is easily affected by dust and photo sensor are not. Every measurement system don't like pollutions. For example I have many problems with photo sensor measurement system. After a while I figure out that few drop of the oil entered inside of the sensor reading head and thats cause all the errors. I never have this problem on magnetic tape. But I agree photo sensor are better protected and offer more accuracy only that price.... When you need to use some measurement system you must decide for what purpose you need it. I personally thing that photo sensor with middle positioning accuracy such as for example 0.8 µm is really good compromise. Some producer offer better accuracy (less 0.08µm) but this system are really expensive and it's hard to use useful so big precision. Small difference in temperature take your precision from workpiece. With regards, Makaveli
