Hi. Thanks to MicroMan you have a good answer. Please allow me to add a fewthoughts to explain some implications. When using symbolic addressing the HMI request the data from the PLC via the symbol name. In theory at least.. Let us say Q0.0 is linked to "GATE". Later you have to move the output so that Q3.0 is now "GATE". The HMI does not mind the change because the HMI asks for the value of "GATE" and not Q0.0. Symbolic addressing is "slower" than absolute method. In real terms you will probably not see any difference. For S7-300 / S7-400 / ET200 the structure allow you to use either. In the S7-1200 and S7-1500 you have to notice how the DB is constructed. If a DB you use to link to the HMI is constructed in "optimized" way, then you MUST use symbolic. I hope this helps.
