Extention rack (for example from S7-200) is just to split a original rack in two narrow lines.

CPU 1212C: Max. 2 CPU 1214C: Max. 8 CPU 1215C: Max. 8 For S7-1500, No. of modules in S7-1500 rack: 32 modules (CPU + 31 modules). Hope this helps.

One thing i would like to add here is that u must also keep power usage of cards in consideration if u are going to use 32 cards as u are then required to place Power Module in between card

This greatly increased the amount of I/O readily available. You just need another S7-1200 for each additional set of expansion modules. Of course, you can use ET200's for distributed/remote I/O to increase further.
