What should I check to prevent the fan speed detection from falling?

I have now experienced 2 separate drives, different sizes, that have faulted on Fan Speed. At first I though it may be due to the fan starter, but it has now occurred after the fan was running constantly for over an hour. I am reluctant to bypass the fault in case there is a problem with the fan speed. What can be causing the problem with the fan speed detection?
