It has been determined that the so-called clock battery in every recorder, a CR2032 lithium cell, does more than keep time. It also maintains a number of variables in RAM that are saved there on power shutdown. If the clock battery is bad, then the failure to save the needed variables in RAM can cause fault messages similar to those mentioned above on power up. The process of replacing the internal O/S CF card would wipe out incorrect variables in RAM and mask the true source of the problem, a bad clock battery. I replaced the clock battery while replacing the O/S CF card so eliminated the problem that way, not knowing that I probably did not need a new O/S CF card because it was probably not the O/S CF card that was the problem, it was the bad clock battery. The current approach is to recommend replacing the clock battery before replacing the O/S CF card. Power down the recorder and remove the clock battery. Allow 30 minutes with the battery out of the recorder to allow the RAM memory to discharge and lose its memory state before replacing the clock battery with a new cell. Then power the recorder back on. A clock battery is cheap compared to a replacement O/S CF card. A known issue with clock battery replacement is that a with the ESS (extended security option) will wake up after the battery replacement thinking the date is 01 Jan 2003. The ESS Extended Security will determine that all passwords are expired and there will be no way to log-in to the recorder. I've heard that this can occur even with recorders that are not ESS, that have standard security. The work-around is to get one day access codes consisting of a user name and password that provides access to the password security group only (no access to other configuration areas). The one-day-use password can then be used to Reset Passwords, which wipes out all user names and passwords, requiring re-entry and re-configuration of the security passwords. It's important to immediately re-enter a user name with administrative access that can then be used to configure security passwords without restrictions on the day/date. To obtain the one-day access code beforehand provide the internal serial number of the recorder (Menu > Status > System > General), an 6 digit number, 8xxxxx, starting with the numeral 8. State that the codes are needed for the 01 Jan 2003 date. The one-day-use codes will have to be used on the same day as the battery is replaced because the clock will start timing and counting up as soon as power is restored. 24 hours after the battery is replaced, the clock will show 02 Jan 2003 and the one-day-use codes will have expired and will not work. The recorder can not determine that the clock battery has been replaced, so the clock data under maintenance group will not reflect the fact that the battery has been replaced. All data in RAM memory will be lost, which includes all chart data. If replacing the clock battery does not fix the boot problem and the cryptic codes continue, then pursue the replacement internal O/S CF card. I can't help with how-to-purchase, I'm a user in the US (this is user forum, not a Siemens support forum).
