Where to find logged alarms in SQL Server

Salma Gold Member Joined: 9/27/2005 Last visit: 11/27/2007 Posts: 1398 Rating: (150)	Hi Stefan You will need to buy the Connectivity Pack Option which will give you an OLEDB and OPC A+E interface to the WinCC data. Both these drivers give you access to the WinCC alarm data from external applications. NOTE: Even though WinCC stores the alarms in an SQLServer database, you are not licenced to directly access the alarm tables (yes, it will usually span across multiple databases / tables). Instead you must use one of the above drivers. This is both a licence and a support issue which has been discussed in previous posts in this forum, I know this is a pain but it is how Siemens have programmed WinCC so we must abide by their rules. WinCC comes with an instance of SQLServer in which it stores it's historical data. It is the licence to access that instance of SQLServer that I am referring too. If you have purchased a separate SQLServer then that will be covered by a separate licence BUT it cannot be used by WinCC to store it's data in. This should be in the EULA or you can contact pre-sales for clarification if necessary.

steffo Posts: 38 Rating: (0)	I'm sorry salma, to be such a pain in the butt. But I have to ask. What if I write a script function that triggers when an alarm raises, that loggs the alarm i my separately bought sql server. Is the data that I've created still a licence issue? /Stefan

This is because you are not accessing the database, only the tags and the current alarm information (which is available from the GMsgFunction script function). A good rule of thumb that I use is: - If you want to read / write data from a WinCC database then you need an additional licence. If you simply want to read / write tag values then that's included in the core WinCC licence. One last thing, the script function that triggers when an alarm occurs is a C function. However I would recommend writing to your database from a VBS script - it's more supported. In the past people have used tags to trigger the VBS script from the C script. Just a thought in case you haven't already implemented this. Regards, Salma
