Which station should I use?

Saruca Posts: 122 Rating: (1)	Hi everyone, I need urgent help, because I'm going crazy. I'm trying to decide which Simatic S7 Station would best suit my needs at the lowest price and I'm starting to think that I picked a project too big for a first one. I need to connect 28 HMI devices (I was thinking about TP177A or KTP600) to a PLC that would be connected to a PC with Wincc SCADA software. At first I thought about using just one S7-300 station and Profibus. The PLC just has to be the link between the HMI devices and the SCADA system. It only processes the data coming from the panels and sends it to the PC where the SCADA is installed. I realized that if I used the S7-300 most of its features would remain unused so I started to think about the newest S7-1200. This way I would have to use Profinet instead of Profibus and that's not a problem but I don't know if just one S7-1200 station would be enough to manage all the data coming from the 28 panels. Maybe the choice is obvious to you guys, but this is my first project and I'm afraid I would make a huge mistake if I chose the wrong one. Thanks in advance, Sara

Thanks in advance, Sara Hi Sara, I am not Familiar with 1200 Series but please Checked that which CPU you are considering is supported the 28 HMI connection For S7-300 also it is depend on PLC type. So Please Take the Advise of Pegaia for S7-1200 Configuration & for S7-300 28HMI strange one to connect …..

UMENCHO Diamond Member Joined: 3/21/2006 Last visit: 12/4/2023 Posts: 10222 Rating: (1178)	Hello, Regard S7-1200 CPU and panels - 1. Basic panels have limits in tags.(256 tags in TP1500 Basic PN). 2. CPUs there has limits in connections. ( 3 for HMI 1 for programming device 8 for Ethernet instructions in the user program 3 for CPU-to-CPU So, in your case I don't think is possible to use S7-1200 family. Except if you make some reorganization inside and make a groups to put more CPUs. Regard S7-200 CPU and panels - 1. There also has limits in max. numbers of HMI comp. Regard S7-300 CPU and panels - 1. I don't think one CPU will be enough there. Even in case with 319CPU... Best regards, Hristo Mihalev

Saruca Posts: 122 Rating: (1)	Hi, I had already seen the limitation of 4 ethernet ports in the S7-1200 CPUs but I didn't know if it could be solved by using some switches. Then I started thinking that 28 HMI devices were too many compared to the example networks I''ve seen. Usually they consist of several S7 CPUs and a couple of HMI devices so I started wondering if just one CPU would be enough. Thanks for your help Hristo, now I'm started to think about making groups of panels and assigning each group to a S7-Station. And thanks again Ammy, you're all very helpful. Sara

By looking in, What is the maximum number of OPs that a CPU S7-300 can communicate with? You will find that S7-317-2PN/DP can support 32 OP connections. However I still agree with UMENCHO. Theoretically you can have 32 connections but I feel (I never worked with such number of HMIs connected to a single CPU)that communication will not be as fast as you wish and you may find yourself wondering why my communication is very slow. That's why it's recommended to go for more than one CPU. Best regards. H-H

I will have to redesing my network, because you're rigth, it's a big risk connecting that many panels to just one S7 Station. It would surely affect the speed of the network as you say. Saruca Posts: 122 Rating: (1)	Hi everyone, I finally decided to reduce the number of HMI devices in the network. I've redesigned my project and now CPU 312C-2DP will be enough. It supports up to 8 connections. I've read in the forum that one of those must be used for connecting the PG/PC but I'm using MPI for that, so my question is this: would I be able to use the 8 connections for HMI devices? UMENCHO Diamond Member Joined: 3/21/2006 Last visit: 12/4/2023 Posts: 10222 Rating: (1178)	Give us exactly MLFB number of the selected CPU. Seems 312C-2DP doesn't exist. Practically 8 panels connected on one CPU is also too much. Take in mind how many I/O will be there.
