Why do we use iec 870-5-104 protocol at somewhere ?

Some information about the protocol can be found on this website: http://www.ipcomm.de/protocol/IEC104/en/sheet.html And there are Siemens products supporting this feature. Ates Posts: 198 Rating: (16)	yes actually i know/use vicos (unfortunately) :) actually my question come from this question : but what can be done with it which cant be done with wincc ? why use it ? we use vicos because of iec protocol, but why do we use iec protocol ? this is the question , whats its plus from s7 protocol..

J_Bell Posts: 5822 Rating: (411)	Dear Ates, I am sorry but the IEC 870-5-104 is not an S7 Protocol. The Protocol is the Ethernet Network layer of the IEC 870-5-101 Protocol. Well this Protocol is as important as it is because it uses the most precise Timestamps available is these Systems. Time Stamps are very important to figure out the cause of a Problem, especially if the Reports of Faults appear in a flood. The Timestamp allows a precise line-up of the Reports... very important.
