WinCC Server - Client connection with duel ethernet

Wacky Posts: 60 Rating: (2)	Hi all, Does WinCC redundant server - client connection supporting duel ethernet? Each server has two lan cards and each client has two lan cards. I found a Redundant Terminal Bus Adapter Packet for PCS7. It seems to use 2 x INTEL lan cards. Is it possible to use other lan card, instead of INTEL? Thanks!

Pieter Booysen Posts: 10 Rating: (1)	WinCC V6 does NOT do dual Ethernet. At all. There is no solution in the marketplace that assist you in achieving dual Ethernet with WinCC (and with this I mean real dual Ethernet such that if any cable is unplugged from a machine then the system still works). Teaming network cards does not work reliably either. Your only solution is to create an application that runs as a service that performs this function with neglible network overheads. We called Siemens to our offices and demonstrated our solution to them and requested that they incorporate this functionality into the next release of WinCC. It took us a significant effort to get this working. A major oversight in my opinion...

But, how to produce the service function?I tried editing the "host" file with two ip per computer name is failure. e.g. "ServerA 192.168.100.100 ServerA 192.168.100.101 ClientA 192.168.100.102 ClientA 192.168.100.103 ........................." I have no idea on the service function.

Pieter Booysen Posts: 10 Rating: (1)	No, your host file will not be used at all. This application must perform all the actions. Both network cards will have exactly the same network address. Your code will switch between cards.

Pieter Booysen Posts: 10 Rating: (1)	WinCC can not work with dual Ethernet out of the box. Teaming network cards does not work. For instance: if your network switch port to your server still works but the connection from the switch to your clients is broken then your system will NOT switch over because the teaming software is still running happily. This MUST BE HANDLED INSIDE THE SERVER. You need to write an application to perform this task that is omitted inside WinCC: verify you can see all the clients and OPC devices, if fail, switch network cards, but keep the IP address. On Clients: verify you can see server, then switch network cards. The solution above can run as service, does not have high network overheads and can be implemented on any network cards, including the onboard network card. Teaming Cards therefore only works for a subset of scenarios where communication between the client and the server is broken. The SERVER must determine whether the clients are available (software) and then switch networks - not whether the network connection to its server box is working (hardware). This is an ommission inside WinCC and the suggested application performs this function. A similar function on the client side performs the action where the server can still see some clients (does not therefore have to switch network cards) but one of the clients can not see the server (therefore the client needs to switch network cards to see the server on the alternative network). To put it a third way......... teaming cards only look at the network section between the server and the switch to which the server is connected. Failures beyond that switch will not be addressed by the teaming cards. Brilliant solution if you have only one switch on your network, but this is a rare situation in real life!
