Hello all, First of all, I would like to thank you all for honest opinion which helps a lot! I haven't been in siemens world for a while (since TIA Portal 14) and don't have too much experience with siemens as you would presume. I'm more of a Mitsubishi guy that appreciate low software cost and still great capabilities of their systems at affordable and hassle free prices. Recently started looking for scada solution to connect our factories with our ERP and came across more or less good solutions. To be honest none of them are perfect and all of them are talking about great functionalities and being able to connect to various systems and technologies but in the real world it's hard work first figuring out the concept and then doing what you want to do. Therefore, I came across WinCC Unified concept and loved the idea of having everything packed into the TIA Portal which I really liked back in TIA14 days, and of course I had a quick try. Since I am on this forum, you can presume it didn't go too well. Main functionality I'm after is related to database connectivity for the purpose of recipes functionality, traceability and batch tracking. At the moment it seems way too complicated with WinCC Unified, or I just haven't yet came across the right manual. Having read the whole forum, my question would be if any or some of the problems mentioned here have been improved in latest version and do you believe it is worth "sticking with siemens" for what I want to acchieve. I am sorry if you find this question or my opinion silly or irrelevant, I would just very much appreciate your opinion since everybody here has much more experience in scada world than myself. Thanks in advance, ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |

Well hello there, i think this is a pretty interessting topic and hard to answer. The main problem is, it's unclear, how the product was sold to you. In technical conversations with Siemens i hardly hear, that the product is perfect or even "finished" with everything the system should be able to do in the future. The main point is, Unified currently is not for the biggest projects. Though there are big improvements. I have worked with other Siemens SCADA Systems before (WinCC V7.x). This system has grown all the time and i assume the same will happen with Unified. What might be really promising is following: The WinCC V7 base itself is not perfect either, for some usecases there are Add-Ons, that do the job for you. There are the so called PM-Addon (Process Management) and they are really big, with lot of functionalities. Obviously there is work to do, if they should be available with WinCC Unified aswell, but there already is the first step for this: This is the first of the Add-Ons now for Unified. I guess it does not have the full functionalities, but i have not tried, it's super new. I would say, that Unified clearly has the potential to be a system capable of what most people need. If you need it already, it might be hard though. |
