WinCC Unified V17 Upd 4 - Changed computer name stuck in partly running

Good morning,

I have a project running in WinCC V17 Update 4 that was working perfectly, but the client changed the computer/server name, and now I can't get the project ot get out of partly running.

The SCADA itself runs, but takes over 2 minutes to start and tag logging/history and alarms aren't working.

Using the TraceViewer I get errors related to the SQL. I seem to have narrowed it down to the fact that the project is still trying to use the old computer (and thus SQL Server) names, and not the new names.

Since the tag history is crucial for this client, is there any way to fix this, besides deleting the project from the Runtime Manager?

Yes, it is not tested or recommended to change the computer name after installing WinCC Unified RT PC. Especially if MS SQL is installed or used because the old PC name is linked to the SQL.

You can try to start the “WinCC Unified Configuration” tool and the wizard makes the necessary settings

Hi,

Changing the name of the PC after installing WinCC SCADA (and here I include WinCC V7, WinCC Professional and WinCC Unified PC), can corrupt the installation and lose the link with the MS SQL Server that is installed with the software by default.

From my experience, you can try uninstalling the software and SQL (please see this FAQ), running the Unified Configuration Tool again, but in many cases in the end the fastest and most effective solution is to start with a clean image of the operating system to install the software again and do not change the name of the PC again.

I'm not sure if you will lose the old segments or not, but you have few other options.

Use WinCC Unified Configuration or as @itafusna tells you, reinstall software and SQL.

I have tried it only to rebind the SQL to the new PC name but I had no previous history. You can see in the attached video what the process would be like.

 In the video you can see a warning "computer name or IP has Changed" when you open the WinCC configuration tool, in my case that warning does not appear.

Maybe it didnt detected that the name changed?

In that case, the only solution may be to reinstall software and SQL.

For future cases the name of the PC must not be changed as indicated by Siemens in the requirements of WinCC Unified RT

This depends on the TIa Portal Version. In V17 I think the message do not appear, only since V18
