WinCC Version Problem

Waterboy Posts: 85 Rating: (6)	Hello there, Is it possible to open a graphic file (.PDL) created in WinCC K 6.0.3.0 (i.e. SP3) in Win CC k6.0.2.0 (i.e. SP 2) I am facing trouble opening a file in SP2 created in SP3 . Graphic designer just throws the error message "Error Opening the File" Help !!

At least you should never put an application to run on a custumer site witch was edited in a newer version. I saw problems like that myself (and it was worst: no error messages but some features just doesn't work). Best regards, Dimitri.

Waterboy Posts: 85 Rating: (6)	Well, I am not trying to access WinCC 6.0 project through WinCC 5.1 or older version It's just an upgraded service pack. Can anyone please tell me that do service packs for WinCC 6.0 have backward compatibility?

However it is not always forward compatible between service packs (which is not unreasonable if you think about it). You can open V6SP2 files using V6SP1 but you cannot open V6SP3 files using V6SP2. I hope you agree with my comments above and understand why this makes sense.

Waterboy Posts: 85 Rating: (6)	I guess when you say backward compatible it means lower version being able to open the higher version files if while making the file extra fetures in the higher verions are not used. This is exactly the case when I am trying to open SP3 file in SP2. But it is not working.So we can not say that we have backward compatibility here. Anyways , thanks for the confiramtion that SP3 file can not be opened in SP2. Just a though....the error message we get can be modified to say so. Noe it just says that "Error Opening the File" and user knows nothing what is going wrong.

I see backwards compatible as a new version being able to open older versions. I know there is a programming philosophy that uses embraces the concept of encapsulation that allows old to open new. However I have never seen any software program that uses this. It also means that you would need to know ALL software changes you are going to make in the future - tricky without a crystal ball [:P] Honestly, I don't mean to start an argument and would like to agree to disagree on terminology if OK with yourself. I don't want to cause offence. The default error message cannot be changed other than by the WinCC developers. However you should be able to program something yourself using C++ or maybe even VBA that can give a more user-friendly message. Regards, Salma

DimiCamp Posts: 168 Rating: (49)	Hi there: Project Files generated by WinCC are compatible with FORWARDS WinCC versions! WinCC is compatible with Project Files generated by BACKWARDS WinCC versions! And when I say "version" it includes Service Packs and Hot Fixes. Don't have illusions if a file generated by v60SP2 opens with v60SP1. As I said before, you can even open it, but if youedita project on your computer and put it back to runwith an older WinCC version at the customer site, I have one word for you: headache! niceweekend, Dimitri

If you created a project in v6.0 SP1, for instance,and then edit it on SP2, 3 or 4you will most likely not see any problems while running the project on the newer version. However when you try to run it on the older version againproblems will most likely occur. And it gets worse: once you've edited your project on a newer version, simply deleting the changes and re-editing in the older version will not correct things. If you have to edit a project which is running on an older version on the operating station then on your machine, either upgrade the operating station, if possible, or edit it with the older version. Check the WinCC compatibility list (e.g. WinCC x Windows, WinCC x Simatic Net etc) at http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/21927773 2. Check if the customer have a System Installation Manual describing step-by-step the software installation. If they have,possibly this document will need to be updated too, since version-to-version little diferences always rise. See ya, Dimitri.
