The same protocol on all stations (the best is ethernet) 2. Direct visibility between every point and central station In this way there is no problem to choose some WiFi manufacturer which can provide you equipment capable of 5km communication. If you can't meet direct visibility rule then you should choose GSM solution which will be expensive and requires other protocol (in my experience the best is modbus for GSM). If you keep to use Siemens look at Simatic S7-300 wireless?(almost the same issue but the required distance is less then yours. ) Other way is to use GPRS for the remote stations. And an Internet connection at the central location. fritz Diamond Expert Joined: 10/7/2005 Last visit: 3/20/2025 Posts: 3042 Rating: (1061)	Yes it is Prats, Voyager 1 is at time of writing some 17,408,281,206 km away from Earth (see HERE for more) and still wirelessly communicating so you can surely communciate wirelessly over 4 km, wouldn't you agree? If you give us some details about the applicationand what sort of speed you need, we may even be able to give you advise on equipment that does not require usage of a rather large Satellite dish.

Anchobi Posts: 139 Rating: (25)	Be careful with your wireless design and not to exceed the EIRP (effective isotropic radiated power) determined by your government communications body. 802.11 devices operating in the 2.4GHz and 5Ghz ranges are operating under the public park principal (as well as other licence free bands). This is similar to when the police come knocking at your door because the music at your party is too loud and disturbing the neighbors. In many countries you may find similar type inspectors looking for abuse of transmit power. EIRP is the equivalent to transmit power + transmit antenna gain. The siemens modems transmitt at a max of 50mW (17dB). In australia we are limited to 36dB EIRP. So for Full transmitt power we are looking at 19dB antenna. considering a power loss over 4km for 2.4GHzis about 112dB, with the 2x 19dB antennas you should expect signal strength around -57dB not including other losses. This should be plenty for an 11Mbs connection. Note also that when a modem transmits at 54Mbs its transmit power is much less then 17dB (i think about 10dB from memory)so it may be better to set your modem at the lower communication speed.
