Hello B1Z; Had you asked 2 years ago, I would have suggested the Profibus ILM (Infrared Link Module), we used it for such an application in one project, and the specs of the unit would have been right for you too. Unfortunately, it seems the product has been discontinued in 2008, maybe not enough buyers. Siemens offers only Profinet wireless support, either to a Profinetor Profibus-DP slave. Have a look at the following FAQ: "Linking Profinet nodes with Wireless Lan" http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/19550110 A Profinet Lan can be connected to a Profibus slave: Wireless integration of PROFIBUS lines An existing Ethernet network can be expanded by a mobile network without increased overheads. An existing PROFIBUS network can, for example, be connected using an access point and the IWLAN/PB Link PN IO (see schematic below). The wireless connection is established to the mobile stations by connecting a SCALANCE W access point to the Ethernet network. The mobile stations are connected over wireless with a client module, for example the SCALANCE W746-1PRO client module to which the mobile station is connected by a cable. But that would require a PN CPU...You could also look at Prosoft Technology's Wireleless Profibus Master and Slave combinations. http://www.prosoft-technology.com/prosoft/products/stand_alone_gateways/wireless/wireless_profibus_dp_communication_gateways A typical topology is shopwn in the attached picture. Hope this helps, Daniel Chartier |

DataEagle also have a series of wireless profibus modems as well. they ofer them in more than just the 802.11 modulationprotocols aswell so you can be sure of data security if the link is in a public place. start here http://www.schildknecht.info/ |

Hello Darius, guys; We did a project on Profibus-DP wireless telemetry, using Satel radio-modemsin a topology similar to the one shown here: http://www.satel-west.com/support/applications/profibus.htm The onl7y reason i did not suggest this earlier is cost and speed (these modems were limited to 9600 baud over Profibus at the time, don't know if they have different baud rates available now). The low speed enabled them to bypass the ack-timing that Darius mentionned. The system was quite stable, with acceptable performance for our needs. But as I said, could be overkill forthis application. Hope this helps, Daniel Chartier |
