WTF Siemens

jc2605 Advanced Member Joined: 2/7/2012 Last visit: 8/22/2024 Posts: 52 Rating: (7)	Pardon me but I'm going to vent a little here about Portal V13. Siemens first released V13 with a lot of bugs. We had to upgrade to it because the new V4 cpu's only work with V13. The initial software release and following updates were so buggy that we ended up with 6 updates and still have issues. V13 will not upload from a PLC previously downloaded to in V11 or V12. This causes us many issues because we still have to support our products in the field. Upgrading a project to V13 is causes many headaches unless it is either already in firmware V3.0 or upgraded to V3.0 first. Of course Siemens doesn't tell you this. The hidden check boxes for HMI or cpu to cpu comunication were dificult to find, again with no help from Siemens. This list can keep going but I need to get to the point. Now Siemens releases V13 SP1, but not all at one time. Some of our technicians, trying to stay on top of updates because V13 has been so problematic, installed the available software upgrades. Our computers have Step 7, Sinamics Startdrive, PLC Sim, and WinCC installed on them. Only the Step 7 and WinCC updates were released. They updated those 2 programs to SP1 but since the other programs were not updated, TIA V13 SP1 has issues. Now the PLC Sim update is available on the TIA Updater but not Sinamics StartDrive. For Sinamics StartDrive, you have to go to the web site, register for some kind software export authorization and wait another 3 days for authorization so we can finish updating the software so TIA will run correctly. All I can say is WTF Siemens!

There is a one good thing with TIA Portal which you don't need to uninstall previous version in order to install new one, and also old version will not be updated with new one, but new version will install next to old version. So you can have V11, V12 and V13 on the same computer side by side and use them. that is why e.g. projects have extensions like ap11, ap12, ap13. Regards

Regards Actually, you cannot have the same version of WinCC FLexible installed on the same computer. By this I mean: We use the Professional version of the software. In order to install the WinCC Professional portion of TIA Portal V13 on the computers, V11 and V12 Professional must be uninstalled. I then had to obtain V11 and V12 Advanced and install them on the computers so that I can have V11, V12, and V13 installed on the same computers. This further illustrates my point of the issues with V13 since all 3 versions must be installed for us to be able to support our products. Great Job Siemens!!!

On a particular service call where we had multiple 1214C cpu's, one of the cpu's needed to be replaced due to a failure. Of course the new cpu was V4.0 while the rest were originally programmed with V11. To keep all of the cpu's on the same TIA version, the on site technician first upgraded the project to TIA V12 but did not upgrade the firmware of the older cpu's. When the technician then upgraded the project to V13, he could no longer connect to the cpu's. The connection manager would see and recognize the cpu, but it would not connect. After numerous hours wasted troubleshooting, we found that upgrading the firmware to V3.0 or higher in V12 before converting the program to V13 would allow everything to work. It was a long frustrating night for many of us.

In a couple of years I suppose that the TIA V1X will be great, but now it is a real pain. And I don't want to tell you how it is hard with Scout TIA: they made this new scout tia without the full hardware support that the Scout 4.3 had (CU305, ecc), so the point is that you really don't know what to do... ATM I think the best thing is to avoid installing all the HF but wait the SPs or another major release (V14 for example), but indeed it's hard for everyone, so keep fighting :)
