dchartier Grandmaster Joined: 9/27/2006 Last visit: 11/4/2024 Posts: 12293 Rating: (2690)	Hello diar; Before I answer your questions, a little overview: A CP341 is a serial communication processor that firts in a S7-300 rack (or a ET200-M Profibus slave rack); it is generally used to connect a PLC to a number of serial communication partners, such as barcode readers, serial scales, serial printers...Parametrisation and programming for the CP341 is done through the PLC, so the "laptop" (programming unit) will generally connect through MPI, Profibus or Ethernet to the PLC. Serial communications can use different physical support, such as RS-232, RS-485 and current loop (TTY). You must select the correct model opf CP341, as they comewith different interfaces. You can then select a protocol, already configured (Modbus comes to mind) or ASCII, which you have to define in the CP341 parameters (format of the end of text character, maximum number of characters per exchange...). Once this is selected, you have to use special communication function blocks (provided with the CP341 software); these you call inside your own program, selecting adequate addresses and source/destination areas for the data in the PLC memory area (generally DBs that you create fpor the purpose). Now: for your questions, but not in the order you persented them: 3) When should you connect "the laptop" to the CP341? I wouldn't normally, it is not required for standard communication applications. However, if you had to establish a connection beteen a serial comm service/program on the laptop to talk serially to the PLC, say Hyperterminal, then i imagine you could try it. 2) Advantages? Well, if you have an application that requires this type of connection, then it would be disadvantageous not to do it, right? 3) connection hardware depends on the model of CP341selected, a RS-232 model would require a null-modem RS-232 cable from the COM1 port to the interface of the CP341; a RS-485 model would need a RS-232 to RS-485 converter on COM1, plus a RS-485 cable to the CP341 interface; a TTY connection would also require adequate converter and cable. Software you choose to use is a question of personnal preference, as it has nothing to do with the PLC programming. Hope this helps, Daniel Chartier
