Communications between PC(rs232) and PLC S5 (CP524)

buragno Member Joined: 12/24/2008 Last visit: 3/26/2024 Posts: 6 Rating: (1)	I have a Packaging plant with a S5 PLC 115U CPU 943B connected via CP524 to a PC(Win 95) with VB6 application: I had to change the PC, because I need to connect it to the local network, but the new PC(WinXP) doesn't communicate with PLC... PC has two RS232 ports, one connected with a labeler and one with PLC: software is working right in the old PC, but in new one only labeler works; I tried to switch the ports, but only labeler works. I think new PC is too fast running the application, and the comm protocol of the application doesn't receive data in right time... Please, if you had experience about it, give me a little help, Thanks.

May be a driver like 3964(R) is needed andyou did not reinstall in the new PCthe driver needed to communicate with the PLC? Or the driver is not compatible with XP.

To communicate with PC you need to load special drivers (manual) . For more info ask nearest Siemens technical office. This manual is helpfull (part 1, page 140) Manual for S5-CP525 / CP524 / COM525 best regards

I repeat: I don't see any DLL or similar files in Project references or components looking a Siemens driver. I also toggled a breakpoint in code execution in the line that checks errors, and saw a "54" value (it should be a Asc(com1.input) value, but in CP524 manual I downloaded from Support I don't find any reference to error codes. Hey, are you still awake???

I'm now reading the RK 512 pages and I think that protocol used is this... now i'll try to find the error code... Thanks again, I'll tell you if I have news, bye.

Can you try this: Connecta second PC (intead of the S5 PLC) and start Hyperterminal (or any other free terminal software, I remember that"compspy" was very popular at that time)with the correct settings (speed, start, stop, ...) and start the VB application. You should at least see something coming in (the STX charachter for instance). Just to be sure that your VB application really sends something.

I'm very sorry I didn't say thanks to everybody, but it's lot of time I don't read forum I think it was cause of PC speed in cycling VB6 program: it was too fast checking PLC answer after sending request, and maybe answer was not yet sent... I've put some sleep functions in VB6 code and it worked fine! Thanks Everybody, next time I better enable notifications!!! Bye, Kicco O.
