When trying to read the Link LED status by keeping the value as 5 then getting 9 as return value

Hello there ..i know its an very old post but i would like to mention that when m trying to read the Link LED status by keeping the value as 5 then I am getting 9 as return value which means that   

"LED does not exist or status information not available " and even if I am trying to read the Rx/Tx signal then also I get the same return value.

Please suggest why this is happening , theoretically  it should give some correct value but its not giving practically.

Kindly provide some solution to this.
