You can perform the update via Micro Memory Card or online:

1. Micro Memory Card:

Requirements for creating an operating system update card:

• Micro Memory Card with 8 MB storage capacity or more (order number 6ES7953-8LP20-0AA0)
• STEP 7 V5.1 SP2 or higher
• PC with external PROM programmer 6ES7792-0AA00-0XA0 or
  FieldPG / PowerPG for programming the Memory Card

Creating the operating system update card with STEP7:

1. Download the desired CPU file.
2. Unpack the file by double-clicking the file name.
3. Delete the Micro Memory Card by performing "File/S7 Memory Card/Delete" in Simatic Manager.
4. Program the operating system by choosing in Simatic Manager "Target system/Update Operating System", select the destination directory and start programming by opening the CPU_HD.UPD file.
5. Programming of the operating system update card is completed when the message "The firmware update for the module with order no. 6ES7318-3EL00-0AB0 was transferred successfully to the S7 memory card" appears on the screen.

To update the operating system:

1. Switch the power OFF on the power supply (PS) of the CPU's rack
2. Isolate the PLC from the communication network
3. Insert the prepared operating system update card into the CPU
4. Switch the power ON on the power supply (PS) of the CPU's rack
5. The operating system will be transferred from the Micro Memory Card to the internal CPU Flash EPROM. All the CPU's LEDs will come on (FRCE, RUN, STOP, SF, BF).
6. The operating system update is completed after around 2 minutes, at which point the STOP LED flashes slowly => request for system memory reset
7. Switch the power OFF on the power supply and insert the Micro Memory Card required for operation.
8. Switch the power ON on the power supply. The CPU carries out an automatic memory reset and is then immediatly ready for operation.
9. Before connecting the PLC to the communication network again the clock must be synchronized.

Requirements:

To update the operating system:

1. Start STEP 7 and switch to HW-Config.
2. Open the station with the CPU to be updated.
3. Earmark the CPU.
4. Select the menu option "Target system > Firmware update". The menu option can only be activated if the selected CPU supports the function "Firmware update".
5. In the opened menu "Firmware update" use the "Search" button to select the path to the  firmware update files (*.UPD).
6. When you have selected a file, you will be told in the lower part of the "Firmware update" dialog field for which module and from which firmware version onwards the file is suitable.
7. Click the "Execute" button. STEP 7 will check whether the selected file can be interpreted by the module and - if the result is positive - load the file to the CPU. If the operating mode of the CPU has to be changed for this purpose you will be asked to perform this action. The CPU will then perform the firmware update on its own.
8. Check with STEP 7 (read CPU diagnostic buffer) whether the CPU successfully starts up with the new firmware.

After the system memory of the CPU has been reset, the following values will be retained:

• the parameters of the MPI interface (MPI address and highest MPI address)
• the IP address of the CPU
• the sub-network mask
• the static SNMP parameters
